Final Victory Tournament - The Results!

I think the idea was to stop people form giving middle of the road scores. Another way of putting it, was the game good, or bad :)

When we (Sentient Rabbits Gaming Club) ran Conflicts of Interest we adopted an "average" score.

Both players awarded each other a score from 1 - 5 (5 excellent, 1 poor)
Both players are awarded the average result, rounded down.

eg.

Player A scores player B only 1 point for sportsmanship for whatever reason.
Player B scores player A, 3 points for sportsmanship i.e. a good game.
Both players are awarded 2 points ((1 + 3) / 2 ) each.

This is meant to discourage competitive sportsmanship points (i.e. a bad sportsman awarding people low scores to edge ahead in tournament scores) while a good sportsman will still score a bad sportsman down (since the game is more important to the sportsman than the points earned from it.)

Seemed to work very well!

I do like that system although this storm in a teacup has arisen despite both parties giving maximum sportsmanship!

Not being there or involved, I couldn't comment on that!

It does sound there has definitely been some sort of misunderstanding to say the least, shame as it seems the rest of the day went brilliantly. I think as long as both parties enjoyed their games they should let bygones be bygones :)

P.S. Congrats for the victory btw Triggy ;)

think it was helped out by the vorlons not fighting you 1st game and me bringing vorchans against you 2nd one ;)
Yep, tactical errors always help :) All things being equal, the player who makes the few mistakes will often win. With the Vorlons Alex realised too late that he couldn't afford to play a cat and mouse game.

Although in my game against you I feel that if you'd taken either four Maximuses or four Vorchans you'd have done better as they all hit together.

or if i could have seen you once in the 2nd turn of firing i would have done better as would have criplped or killed a teshlan :)

We have discontinued using sportsmanship points in our tournaments. We have found that it causes more problems than they are worth. There have been incidents on our area in other games where the results of a tournament were manipulated by people giving very questionable sportsmanship awards. Frankly people should be plesant to be around while the games are going on and we shouldn't need to rate how well they act, but occasionally people do get upset or frustrated.

I don't agree that Sportmanship points should affect the outcome of the tourney, but rather the player who score the highest overall in Sportsmanship should recieve a small prize as well as whoever wins the overall tourney winning a larger/better prize.

Just my tuppen'orth

I agree, you should have a seperate award system for 'Sportsmanship'. It's also a polite way of getting the 'Bad' sportsman to improve his game, if he keeps getting low points. As well as to stop people deliberately, marking low scores to bring someone down.

IMHO, if there is a possiblity in the system to abuse it, then it will be used. Now before the masses start shouting at me, and saying that they are 'Good Sportsman'. I'm not pointing the finger at anyone, I'm just pointing to a possible flaw in the system.

It is always subjective what people consider poor sportsmanship

I would mark someone down for really agressive powergaming, arguing over every degree on a turn etc

I would mark down anyone who boughts lots of prefects no matter how they played the game

Others may feel differently, so very subjective
