Final Victory Tournament - The Results!

The centauri for these types of games because thewy have lots of good raid and skirmish ships

the booby prize was two boxes of BF:evo stuff

what makes the centauri so popular?

Good selection of ships all across and Adira for scenario 3 and 5 probably.

One of the better Armageddon choices in tournament where you can potentially use it twice with sufficient choices across the list for other scenarios as well is handy combination...

Really sounds like a lot of fun, wish I could find the time (and the money) to come over to Mongoose towers one day - although I´m not a tournament guy, normally...

?

because once the Minbari and ISA had been toned down (from their previous very powerful incarnations) it left the Centauri (with powerful forward beams and tough hulls) as the new "tourney winner's" fleet

Thanks everyone for such a good time :) I had several tough battles and a lot of fun (aside from winning of course!)

My fleet:

1 x Sharlin
4 x Shantavi
1 x Tinashi
4 x Teshlan
1 x Leshath
2 x Torotha

Game 1
vs Alex (alexb83) 17-3
Space Superiority
5 FAP Skirmish

I took two Teshlans and a Torotha vs Alex's two Transports (he decided not to use a fighter wing as they would just die against me). He decided to try and hide around the asteroid field but unfortunately the Teshlans are a lot faster and I had an initiative sink. Alex did manage to flee both before they died but never managed to even shoot.

Game 2
vs Steve (katadder) 17-3
Call to Arms
5 FAP Skirmish

I took the same fleet again, with their extra XP to force rerolls (of Stealth) if needed and Steve took two Vorchans, two Corvans and two Maximuses. As katadder has pointed out in his report, after a positioning first turn, he came straight at me in turn two but his squadroned Vorchan pair didn't finish the Teshlan off (did well on the rerolled Stealth rolls - my using of XP and only averagely on the damage rolls). My return fire crippled one that was finished off next turn with side and rear arc fire and took out a Maximus as I swept past. His return fire this turn was shall we say, less than spectacular (all four 3+ Stealth rolls failed without need of XP dice). Needless to say I mopped up after that as we were even on ship numbers and mine were bigger.

Game 3
vs Neil (TGT) 17-3
Assassination
5 FAP Raid + highest PL ship

This was going to be a real tactical game (when aren't they with us?) with Minbari vs Minbari. Neil took a Sharlin, two Veshatans and a Teshlan, whilst I took a Sharlin, two Shantavis and nothing else as Neil had a duty roll to reduce my fleet size. We started by circling our respective pieces of scenery and readying for a central clash with all fighters launched. The Teshlan died early when it sped forwards and unfortunately nobody seemed to tell one Veshatan captain the plan as he broke formation with a successful come about roll that placed him firmly within 2" of the front of both Shantavis. Needless to say, he wasn't there by the end of the turn (and to rub salt into the wounds, failed his Stealth roll to shoot back). With the Sharlin and Veshatan on opposite sides of the table, circling for position, my fleet was caught a bit in the middle. This wasn't so bad though as the rear Sharlin guns could threaten the Veshan until the end and although one Shantavi was lost, I fled the rest of my ships in the later turns to ensure range and victory.

Game 4
vs Ben (darkstar) 17-3
Annihilation
Every ship left!

My old nemesis on table one in the final game. He had Centauri that were virtually intact with:
1 x Adira (1 point damage, 4 XP)
1 x Tertius (fresh)
6 x Prefect (mostly intact, most with XP)
3 x Maximus (fresh)
5 x Corvan (most fresh but one with a CQ of 5 and some with XP)

I was definitely more than a little apprehensive at facing an intact Adira (better than intact with its XP to reroll failed Stealth rolls) and let's just say facing a fleet of Prefects, Tertius and Corvans is a little tough... I had virtually my entire fleet left too except for one Shantavi and most were reletively intact. He deployed first in a line on his back edge to stop me jumping in behind him, keeping his Adira in hyperspace. I put my entire fleet in a pack on the extreme left flank, with the Sharlin and experienced Shantavi in Hyperspace, in an attempt to roll up his battle line.

I would say the plan worked but his Tertius managed in the two shots it was alive for to take out a Tinashi and almost a complete Shantavi with 5+ Stealth rolls using beams alone. This aside, my Hyperspace ships did a nice job of coming in to support the flank and as expected his Adira came in behind me. With hindsight it probably should have come in my centre to use its awesome spread of guns and force me to deal with it - I shot at it once with some rear Fusion Cannon and the GEG totally stopped the shot. Whist half of his fleet was coming to bear, I mopped up the Tertius, a couple of Maximuses, a Corvan and three Prefects (would have been four by the time the final turn ended but Ben called it there). The Adira in contrast only managed to kill a Teshlan and finish off a Shantavi (and hurt the Sharlin with a 5+ Stealth roll I forced him to reroll but he succeeded again) with a couple of failed Stealth rolls limiting its damage. Overall the plan worked with no enemy ship getting within 15" and Stealth rolls averaging out by the end of the game. We both agree that a poor, spread out deployment probably cost him the game.

Centauri were a real tough fleet in this tournament but Minbari provide enough problems for such a long-ranged fleet but with a bit of luck, a couple of these results could have gone the other way.

My 3rd Age Earth Alliance fleet consisted of(from memory:

4 Fighter Flights
5 Hermes
3 Olympus
1 Explorer
3 hyperion
2 Nova
3 Omega
1 Omega Command Destroyer

my First game against Shadows finished 13-7 to me. the two shadow scouts did not want to egage my 4 hermes, 2 Olymus and 2 Flights of Starfuries. I lost 2 Starfuries and ended up losing no damage boxes, my opponent lost just six shadow fighters.

Second game against Drazhi again good win to my my opponent was unlucky to witness the luckiest series of dice rolls ever as I crippled two ships on turn one with missiles while my fighters hit the afterburners so they could engage oon turn two, I ended up losing three Hermes and one Olympus took minor damage.

Third game I won 20-0, but I lost two hyperions and my last two Hermes, but the Drakh couldn't cope with my fighters criticaling letf right and centre and the firepower of the Command Omega.

My last game was against Mimbari a lucky critical on the last turn meant my Command omega destroyed his flagship giving me twenty victory points and the game, but at the end I'd lost one Omega, 1 nova, 2 Olympus, and a huge number of fighters.

Excellent day I like the different priority levels in play for the different battles but the third game I wasn't fond of playing 5 point raid with a free big ship is unbalanced as some fleets don't have access to the really big toys. I could have picked a Warlock myself, but the Command Omega is half the cost and has serious enough firepower, but the Drakh I played were just outgunned by the Omega, let alone if they'd had to face an Adeira...

for the next event I would drop the experience totally, I forgot to use my rerolls in the last game anyway and just let eveyone take a fresh fleet for each game, but keep the variety of playing at difering priority levels.

I've attended two Mongoose events not and I've enjoyed both. I missed my normal event at Warhammer World this weekend to attend this event and I'm happy I made the right desision. I even bought the core of the BFE MEA army in antisipation of the next event!

hell yea fella, I turned up to the victory at sea torney with only one game under my belt and doing a LBH with a flat pack fleet!

Ahh, but doing a proper LBH would have been showwing up having played no games of Vas, like I hadn't

I have never bought every Thunderbolt though I have on ocassion bought the last Thunderbolts, but never the first AND last

And I'm not never going to paint them, I just haven't painted them YET

LBH

well ben had a very much high prefect fleet (was it 7?) but apart from that most fleets were fairly balanced i think.
although burgers biggest ship being a strikehawk was amusing.

I didn't face centauri at all! (or minbos!) probably because they were scoring far higher than me!

The strikehawk/vaarl fleet was nastily effective - 21 ships and he was facing off against an armageddon ship with only 63 damage left on it. You need to kill about 5 ships a turn to have a remote chance of beating that many - and strikehawks are tough!

I basically went into the first 2 games playing for draws or sneaky beaky wins (so nearly got the 1vp win vs shadows!) - 2 vorlon transports are at a massive disadvantage to everything else in the game at a 5 skirmish game.

I guess in the game vs. triggy, I messed up - had I gone head on in with two transports (or taken a destroyer) I could've most likely blatted a Teshlan in a good turn of shooting at close range. Even with a withdrawal after that it would've been a draw on points.

Vs. Greg's ISA I did okay up to a point - 5 whitestars went pop pretty quickly in the face of fire from 2 destroyers and a heavy cruiser (I think I killed 2 and crippled one in a single turn of shooting). But after having to deal with them, the heavy cruiser couldn't fire on the victory for a few turns, which was long enough for it to deal nasty nasty damage which really cost me the 4th game against Drazi. Somewhat stitched up on the repair roll mechanic though - Vorlons in campaigns are okay due to auto repair, but being denied the last turn self repair, and having 237 damage to repair on only 4xp points... that's harsh.

Hi all - great fun and excellent opponents.........thanks to all that attended and involved in organising.............

My fleet list already posted on the forum in "For the Glory of the Republic".

Games:

Game One (Neil) - appologies in advance for any misremebered bits!

Couple of Maximus, Corvans and a Sullust - I approached his fellet at speed whilst he drifted into a conveniant dust cloud, first exchange of fire dented my Maximus's with little reply. A corvan and maximus died in exhcange for reasonable damge to one frigate, the Sullust then died in exchange for some more damage and both Nials died against Sentri and a Razik respectively ( :D ). The Minbari scout ran off table persued by my remaining Corvan, leaving a lone Maximus with a frigate directly behind it in a dust cloud. The frigate polished off the fighters and damaged the pride of the Centauri fleet. In retrun it fired the turreted antifighter weapons and...............scored a 6,6 critical! It then considering its job done moved off table leaving two critically damaged Minabri firgates. Great fun! In the EXP session Neil managed to recruit some blokes from the local Minbari garage to repair the crippled ship!

Game Two (vs LBH)
I was expecting a hard nasty battle when I saw it was ISA - Greg's favourite! Luckily LBH's dice rolling was terrible - Sullust gets 8 hits with its beam - no dodges - dead white star................and the game went downhill from there - the same Maximus that had crippled the Minbari Frigate managed to survive and with the 24 EXP earned across the fleet - I gained a whole slew of exciting other duties - giving one Corvan 2 Haven Escorts (one of which had its own Haven Escort). A Sullust gained Shadow pods and I was all set for a good 3rd game.............

Game three (vs Paul I think)
Hmm having spent soooo much tme congratulating myself on my good luck and boring various people about my new Corvan Battlegroup (see above) etc etc plus telepaths and free crew and resource points........I was not thinking of what to take.........
Orginally I had planned to take my Tertius, Mangus's and any surviving Sullust but stupidly choose to take my Corvans (and escorts) plus a Ellutarian and Sullust as wellas the Tertius - Having My Octurion and reducing my opponent with Diverting Raid I was ready - problem was so was my opponent!!
His fleet was two ships - an Adira and a Octurion - hmm, oh well I thought - I have numbers - then watched as he blasted through my fleet in rapid succession - criticals abounded and sheer weight of damage meant ships vanished at a rapid pace (especially the Scout and its Havens - not that I should have used them! - idiot!) He didn't bother to get his fighters out - didn't need them! and the only ship that survived on my side was - you guessed it - the Maximus from the first game (having charged right upto both ships and taking a barrage from both ships on one turn with 5 damage / crew taken! ! I did manage to gain two big damage criticials on the Adira but the Octurion was untouched! Still at least the Centauri won -My opponent played very well and I am only grateful he had not squadroned them as someone suggested afterwards!

Game 4 (vs Low Roller)
My game having finished very quickly  , I was able to watch some of my next opponents games against LBH - where the latter did me an immense favour by tearing huge chunks out of most of his ships - including the Warlock. Alhtough my fleet was depleted from the third game I still had untouched Magnus's, Balavix and Primus plus Maximus and Corvans........
It proved to be a great fun game - if one sided (his Warlock died in turn 2 so badly decrewed it had started the battle)- my low level ships meaning that the few remaing EA Omegas had little to fire at and my fighter screen shreading his in short order. As a exciting melee formed in the centre - lots of cool explosions followed , with both his and my ships detonating and both Primus and Balvarix losing their engines enabling an Omega to boresight both!! The rest of the feet slowly picked off the battered EA ships and left the Centauri in possession of the Field.

All in all - great fun - I didn't do too badly - mid table and enjoyed all my games - my opponentns were the very best of sports........the format was very interesting and made it exciting! It may be best in the future to clarify some of the issues raisedon the day regarding for instance RR points

I was all set to re-roll the result that gave me the points when LBH (Bless him! :D ) checked with MAtt and confirmed that you could use RR pts gained this way --------allowing repair of crippled ships and purchasing new ones..............

so all in thanks! :D

Triggy, you won all your games 17-3!! Whats that all about.
My first two opponents all managed to flee something before the end, the final game didn't go the distance due to time and vs Neil, I fled my own ships to stop them being killed!!! Other than that, the points system used meant that any moderate or large sized victory without killing everything gave you a 17-3 win.

I would have loved to have played Swiss Tony as we both ended up winning all of our games and it would have been a good matchup too :)

You weren't the only one to make a tactical blunder vs me :o

In fact, Steve was possibly the only one not to make this sort of mistake

well i made the mistake of bringing a slightly differant centauri fleet :) not a beam in sight. on hindsight my hull 6 beam ships might have been better.
but then it was all for fun, if i really wanted to win the tourney I would have done a ben ;)

I was a bit miffed that ship-borne flights didn't give VPs - it wouldn't have gotten me a draw in game 3 (it would've reduced it to a 4VP from 6VP loss), but still. It somewhat penalises those who take patrol points as fighters, because they're effectively giving away 3-4vp for a patrol point (even in raid and battle level games). I was killing Vaarls and they gave me less points than I would've gotten for killing 3 starfuries (same PL value).

Also, that by Greg getting a few thunderbolts from his (dead) victory off the table, I didn't get a 20-0 in game 3 :(

If the fighters dont count for VPs, should they count for denying a fleet annihilation? (I'd killed everything that was worth points).
