Fighter Bases

Is it of any importance that the fighter bases are hex bases and have exactly six models on them?
Because if I assemble my Vorlon Fighters I'd like to know wether I can simply use round bases (I like them much more than these pesky hexes) and put a variable number of fighters on them (looks far better).

As far as I see this shouldn't be any problem as the fighters are just markers.

Have you seen the new fighter bases the guy from time slip creations makes? They are pretty good. I spent ages making flying stands for my fighters using acrylic triangles and GW small flying bases, only to see the forum entery one week later. It's on the forum under New flight Stands. Sorry, I don't know enough about computers to make a link to the site.

It was my understanding that the way fighters are based on hex bases with 6 per base, is because this is the way it was done in Fleet Action, and as MGP bought the moulds and the rights to produce them they just stuck to doing it all the same way.

Here is the link to the manufacturer of the flight stands. I think they are great as you get double the stands for gaming purposes out of a package of fighters. Hope this helps.

However, if I remember correctly I asked this question a long time ago and Matt answered me. He said that you could either use the hex bases that come with the models OR 1'' by 1'' bases that matched the fighter counters that came with the basic set. This was because fighters cannot stack and the size of the bases prevented too many fighters from stacking against one ship.

I remember I was disappointed because I was going to use GW epic bases to base my 'Furies. So I went out and bought like 4 dozen 1'' by 1'' cork bases and a drill...

Number of fighters in base, no problem whatsoever.

Changing the base is dodgier though since it alters the game balance. I would not go for that route if I were you. Especially if you are tournament player. Or by the very least have bases that will take up more spaces(ie disadvantage for you) to prevent accusations of twisting rules to your favor unfairly.

I have brought some of the funky 'three fighters to a base' but haven't received them yet. When I do, I will be checking the base size and mounting it on a base that is atleast the size of the card counters. That way, I feel like I'm saving cash as I get two fighter stands for the monetary cost of one base, but will also no be doing my opponent over by having smaller bases. (and therefor more fightersin in a smaller area.)

I will use round bases of appropriate size, so there shouldn't be any big change in diameter, except the bases have some really odd size.
