Demo Games

When running demo games, what do you suggest, counters or ships?

Thinking of getting into VAS, and was curious what folks are using.

Also does anyone know what scale the A&AM ships are going to be?

Last but not least, are you enjoying the games?

Thanks

I plan on playing with minis once I get them in the mail and can paint them up. As a word of advice, if you decide to go with the minis, trace your turn key and fire arc diagram on some clear acetate. It makes it easier to use.

So far, all the games I have played have been fun. Ship positioning is a little less critical than in ACTA as far as getting weapons to bear, since there are no boresight weapons. The lack of a pre-measure does mean that you will hold back a bit more on slow loading and one-shot weapons. As my FLGS owner put it, the game is similiar enough to ACTA for ACTA players to catch on quick, but different enough to force you to change your tactics.

I don't know about the scale of the ships you listed. I am using/going to use GHQ Micronauts and Panzerschiffe ships. Panzerschiffe are very inexpensive and are at a 1:2400 scale. GHQ are much more expensive on most items, but are far more detailed. They are also 1:2400 scale.

Hope that helps some.

I have a few ships of the line from GHQ never did any others, but they are very pretty.

Thanks for the response.

Well, as a comparison for price between the 2 lines, a GHQ battleship is roughly $12 while the same battleship from Panzerschiffe is $5. They are less detailed, but at 1:2400 scale, do you really need to see anchor chains on the deck or be able to pick out the portholes? I found that GHQ subs are only about 5 cent more expensive than Panzerschiffe, so I am using those since they have some deck details. For others, I have a USS North Carolina from GHQ, but I will most likely get all my other ships from Panzerschiffe. GHQ also makes planes to use in 1:2400 scale that I have ordered.

For my demoes this week (tuesday and wednesday), I'm using counters. Some of the local wargamers have figures so I told them to feel free to bring them. I'm not picky. ;)

As for enjoying the game, I haven't played yet, but will know after tuesday how I like it. So far it looks good compared to ACTA.

The one thing that confuses me is the way you turn ships. They "spin" on their tail, rather than rotating on their centerpoint like ACTA.

For casual gaming, the Panzerschiffe ships do fine and have a better cost model for the budget to deal with for the ships.

I'll toss out another vote for Panzerschiffe. Been very happy with their product, service, and price.

Spoke to the guy the other day. . . apparently he's getting slammed with orders as a result of VaS! But he was complaining that he makes 500 different ships, but everybody is ordering the same ones!! (the ones in the VaS rulebook)

Told him that as more supplements/S&P articles come out for VaS, the orders will diversify. . plus once a WWI version comes out, his WWI ships are going to get hit pretty hard too.

Oh. . . my understanding is the A&AM ships are going to be 1:1800 scale. They
re also going to be collectible, which means all the ships you really want will be hard to lay hands on, or cost you $20 each on the internet anyway. Better off with a normal model dealer IMO.

Always on cost, but some folks will get them, and if they work in VAS, perhaps I can uplift them to better rules.

They will indeed be 1:1800 scale and the planes are 1:900 scale and the Rare or Very rare ships will cost more than a GHQ mini.

Wizards also don't have a great track record for historical paint jobs on their AAM minis.

I am going to be keeping a lookout for a set list for the first War at Sea game to see what sort of distribution they plan for the set and if it is decent (ie I can get some good games from the base set) I may pick some up.

Another option are the 1/2400 ships from C-in-C. They're cleanly cast metal. They are much nicer and more detailed than the resin ships, but not as detailed as GHQ. They are priced between GHQ and Panzerschiffe. Here's the link: http://www.pfc-cinc.com/page/page/292434.htm

I have around 300 painted 1/2400 WW2 ships. About a third are from the old metal Superior line, a third from C-in-C, and a third from GHQ. I have one Japanese carrier from Panzerschiffe that I'm using and will probably get some more of their carriers. I'm replacing the 5 battleships that I have from Panzerschiffe. They look fine by themselves, but when you put them along side the other manufacturers, they just don't stand up.

Will the A&AM ships all be in the one scale or will they do what they have done with all the other A&A games and have scales all over the place? Which they also did with the SW space battles.

I am a Navwar 1/3000 man myself. Spoilt for choice. Cheap. Really good company to order from.

Well in the SW battles there is a scale but it is by class, I like the minis, can live without the rules though.

Got any pics of your C-in-C ships?

Yes, I've got some. They were painted more than 20 years ago when I first started painting. Aside from the crummy paint job, you should be able to get a feel for the quality and level of detail. Once I get them all mounted, I'll go back and repaint. Send me your email address, and I'll send them to you. Mine is leadman25 at aol.com
