A tank at 30-50m is highly impressive even if you know you can kill it (or know it's friendly). Not giving into the urge to duck/run is a major effort.

was the kind of "fire and forget" weapon where one could forget about
the user as well as the weapon - being within 50 meters of a tank that
survived the attack did almost guarantee that the user would not ...

more a propaganda expert of the organization of the former members of
the Afrikakorps than a military expert, and he has a tendency to make up
stories to prove how incredibly heroic he and his fellows were. Sorry to
say so, but I would really not trust his books.
