CRB 1st ed. Computer Software (again)

Mongoose
Evening all,

Back in 2008 I asked several questions about computer programs found on pp. 92 and 113 of the CRB 1st edition. Unfortunately, I did not get any replies.

On CRB 1st ed. p. 113 there is a list of Ship Computer software programs which I've compared with the programs found on CT LBB 2 Starships 1977/1981 p. 25. Most of the MgT CRB programs cover those in CT LBB 2, however there does not appear to be an Anti-Hijack program as a stand alone or incorporated into one of the ones listed in the table.

Is there an Anti-Hijack program or would the Security Programs found in the Computer Software Table p. 92 be used?

Looking at the software table on p. 92 I'm not sure how to integrate them into the ship computer software on p. 113.

The Ship Computer Intellect software program is available at TL 10 has a rating of 10 with a cost of Cr1,000,000. On p. 92 the Intellect program has three rating the going from TL 12, 13, 1nd 14. A Intellect TL 12 program has a rating of 1 at a cost of CR2,000, the Intellect TL 13 program has a rating of 2 at a cost of Cr50,000, and Intellect TL 14 program has a rating of 3 without a cost listed which I take to mean cannot be legally purchased.

Looking at the two tables I don't think I can just import the software on p. 92 into the ship software on p. 113.

Any suggestions on how I can merge the two?

You can run the regular software on a ships computer. However the Security program defends the computer not the ship.

Thank-you for the reply and clarification that

1. The computer programs on CRB 1st ed. p. 92 can run on a ship's computer.
2. The CRB 1st ed. p. 92 Security protects only the computer.

That leaves or rises questions about

1.The differences between CRB 1st ed. p. 92 Intellect program with the TL 12 Rating 1 at Cr2,000, TL 13 Rating 2 at Cr50,000, and TL 14 Rating 3+ at not any Cr versus the CRB 1st ed. p. 113 TL 11 Rating 10 at Cr1,000,000.

Is the reason for CRB 1st ed. p. 92 Intellect program's rating and cost being less than the CRB 1st ed. p. 113 Intellect program because it is being run on less powerful computer?

2. Will there be an program similar to CT LBB 2 Starships 1977/1981 Anti-Hijack program included in High Guard 2nd ed.?

3. How would someone introduce a new computer program into MgT hoping to have it adopted as part of the official rules versus being a house rule?

Talk to Matthew about writing a Mongoose Supplement book on Computers or some such with your new/advanced rules.

The software included in the new High Guard is more advanced programs for core computers available on capital ships. Though the software can run on a lesser computer if it has enough capacity to run it. You can also put a core computer on a smaller ship. Mostly combat orientated software.

There's still time for changes to the new High Guard, could try posting over in the playtest section for Ship Design.

Talk to Matthew about writing a Mongoose Supplement book on Computers or some such with your new/advanced rules.

Thank you for suggesting I contact Mr. Mathew Sprange to float a new supplement covering new or advanced rules for computers or other material that may fit in to Mongoose Traveller.

Unfortunately, my intent is not to re-write the computer rules currently in MgT. After comparing the ship programs in CT LBB 2 Starships 1977/1981 with those in CRB 1st and 2nd editions I noted that the CT LBB 2 Anti-Hijack program does not appear to be incorporated into those listed on CRB 1st ed. pp. 92; 113 or CRB 2nd. ed. pp. 106; 151.

In MgT CRB 1st ed. Rating and CRB 2nd ed. Bandwidth appear to function the same as CT LBB 2 Starships Space requirement. The difference is that the in both CRB editions the Rating/Bandwidth for the ship's computer programs are appear to be 5 times larger than in CT LBB 2. Cost is close to the ones listed in CT LBB 2 for the identical program. The MgT programs that combine CT LBB 2 rules together the Rating/Bandwidth and Cost are close enough.

Based on the similarities between CT LBB 2 and MgT CRB 1st/2nd editions importing the CT LBB 2 Anti-Hijack program with a tweak would look like this:

Program: Anti-Hijack; Rating: 5; TL 7; Cost (MCr.) 0.1
Effect: The program is designed to counter high jacking attempts by monitoring conditions onboard the ship. Any monitored conditions that fail to meet the established criteria results in the program automatically locking the access doors to the bridge and engineering. Additionally the program locks out the ship's controls. A person with computer skills with or without an intrusion program can defeat the program.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar enough with any of the MgT rules other than ship design, which I am still working through.

Of course I have not gotten around to comparing the MgT computer rules with those found in CT LBB 2 yet.

Hopefully MgT Computer rules allow player characters to write programs and provide details on small craft computers.

Thank you again for your suggestion.

Thank you for, I think any way, indicating that in HG 2nd edition computers and their software rules are similar to the CRB 1st Spacecraft Design rules and the expansion spacecraft, small craft, and capital ship rules in HG 1st ed.

I'll head over to the HG playtest section and pitch adding the anti-hijack program in HG 2nd ed.

Small craft use the same computers as larger ships.

Thank you for the information that small craft use the same computers as their larger hulled family members.
