Converting old RQ material to the new game?

Bean The Cat

Mongoose
Going through some old game stuff, I discovered in a storage locker, I came across an old copy of Grffin Mountain that I bought way back in the '80's.

I was thinking of starting a game up, but since my RQII book doesn't seem to be in this newly (re)discovered trove, switching to this version of the rules may be required.

So how compatible is this new rule set to the old version?
How much work do you suppose a conversion would be?

And last but not least:

Are there any good convertion documents around?

I use my old stuff all the time, just add in how many CAs and figure out the new strike rank. Maybe 10 seconds an NPC. Of course it is off a bit, weapons damages and things like that have changed, but I have found that doesnt make much difference, and as long as I diont tell the players, they never even notice.

It depends on your GMing style. If you're prepared to simply mentally copy and paste the stats from RQ2 and you can calculate Combat Actions and SR on the fly then you can simply run it from eye. One proviso though is that RQ2 NPS are much richer in magic than MRQ ones. In MRQ, you have to have integrated a rune in order to cast what in RQ2 is called "battle magic" and the cast chance is a skill. Now you can simply ignore that and let NPCs have the magic they have but then you'll have to revise how rune/battle magic works in your Glorantha.

The other thing you'll need are the resistance skills: dodge, persistence and resilience. As a rule of thumb, you can treat dodge as equal to Defence*5. For mooks, persistence would be POW*3 and resilience would be CON*3. Big bad guys would probably be around POW*5 and CON*5.

In general, MRQ is easier to convert to RQ2 than it is to RQ3. I have seen conversion spreadsheets around if you like to pre-convert stuff. Provided you're happy with broad brushstrokes though you can pretty much run RQ2 material under MRQ by eye.

Hi,

I have even converted the Heroquest supplement Blood over Gold:Trader Princes to MRQ for my game in sweden last month without too much effort, although Divine Magic did drive me nuts and Pete Nash showed me how to completely abuse Sorcery Magic in a most impressive display of Munchkindom.

Blasphemy! How did you dare convert a HeroQuest supplement to RuneQuest? You aposthate! The God of Roleplaying will punish you, stripping you of your Name of Power that you no longer deserve: you are no longer a Simon!

BoG is a very good supplement, and is worth playing and translating into any system. Except That Other Game, I mean. I think that Maniria has a scarce theist population, so the need for houseruled Divine Magic is limited. Most inhabitants practice wizardry (the lords) or animism (the barbarians/hsunchen), which have more-or-less useable rules. Written by the same author who wrote BoG, btw.

You'll have to let me know how it turned out... before I sacrifice you to Great Big Canoe.
