Conan 2e - Regaining Fate Points using Foreshadowing

Hi! I'm a new poster, but a very old lurker...

Just got my shiny new Conan 2nd edition (thanks Matthew!) and was reading through the new changes.

One of my favorite is how to regain Fate Points. Basically players must come up with situations they want their characters to enjoy/suffer. They gain FP if those situations come up during a game.

I thought this was a very clever bit. I was wondering if its a brand new rule or if it was adapted from one of the 1st edition supplements?

That is a new rule, and it does sound interesting. Could you elaborate (I haven't gotten my book yet  )? Should you come up with these "situations" at character generation or during play?

By the way, welcome to the boards Stef! :D

Actually both. For each adventure, each player writes three different situations that they want their characters to experience. If one/more happen during the scenario, they gain a Fate Point.

EX: Ral the Nemedian Archer's player wrote down the following 3 foreshadowing:

My character's pride will get him/her in hot water
That slave I saved last week is going to be trouble
I got so roaringly drunk last night I cant remember a thing

these scenes get refreshed each adventure (not necessarily each session I guess)

This is a great way to come up with new subplots for the game.

Also, I'm surprised how good the game looks even in black and white. Good job here, although I would have gladly paid extra to get a full colour book. I love the new border, it has a less cluttered look, plus that lady on every other page looks like my next girlfriend!

I was disappointed to see that my favourite class- the noble wasnt overhauled... I always felt it was a bit underpowered compared to the other ones.

This is finally a fully self-contained RPG- No need to reach for the 3.5 rulebooks whenever special situations arise (falling, fires, etc...)

I'm giving this book 9/10. I would have given it a perfect score (so far reserved for only one other RPG in my lifetime) if this edition had been in colour...

Thanks for the info on Fate points, the new rules sound like fun!

That's a bit of a surprise for me actually.

Hey man, that's my mom you're talking about!

That's a good thing to hear, not having a torch's damage in the book was amazingly annoying. I hope they fixed swimming skill as well (if it's still even included, versus a general athletics skill) to include the DC chart!

Though it wasn't overhauled, you might say that it was upgraded. The Social Standing rules give a much clearer picture of who has how much sway in any given society. Even expatriated nobles can expect to be given some credence, and it sets you clearly above your fellow men in your own country.

It also factors into the general Reputation rules, and Reputation is something important to every noble.
