centauri question

It would be nice if the Kutai was worth taking, i really like the model.

As is the Morgrath, and that makes them worth fielding in my book 8) so yes, i have fielded 2 Kutai and 2 Morgrath recently in a 5pt Raid... (okay, so my centauri fleet is painted red and grey as the Balossians in First to Fall and chose the Kutai to represent the transport of which no model is available)

I was doing a little hacking around with the fleet list lately, and I extracted this list out of it.
Looking at the Centauri fleet purely from the point of view of weaponry, we have;

Common weapons;
Twin Particle Array- always Twin Linked, occasionally weak, range 4 on Haven, Vorchat and Kutai, 8 normally, 10 on the Octurion, 15 on Colony Station
Matter Cannon- AP Double Damage, range 8 on smaller craft, 12 usually, 15 if mounted as main weapon, 18 on Colony station
Battle Laser- Beam Double damage Super AP, range 20 on smaller craft, 25 normally, 30 on Station, 35 on Octurion
So far, so normal. This is the interesting bit;
Uncommon weapons;
Mass Driver- AP Triple Damage Slow Loading Mass Driver, range 10
Ballistic Torpedo-D (Demos mount); Super AP Triple damage, range 15
Ballistic Torpedo-E (Elutarian); Double damage, Precise, Slow Load, Super AP, range 30
Heavy Array; on Demos, Double Damage range 8, on Secundus Double Damage Twin Link range 15
Plasma Accelerator; on Vorchan, AP Double damage range 10, on Tertius Super AP Double damage range 10
Plasma Stream- AP Beam, range 10
Particle Gun- Anti-fighter Weak, range 10
Weapons known (by fluff) to be derived from Centauri technology;
Abbai Combat Laser; AP Beam Precise, range 12 or 15
Brakiri Graviton Pulsars; AP, range 12
Brakiri Graviton Beam; Beam Double Damage Slow load, sometimes AP
Narn Mag Gun- Super AP Triple damage Beam, range 12 or 20
Narn Energy Mine- Slow Load, Energy Mine, range 30
influences on the Centauri
Shadow Self- repair, Pods, Molecular Slicer Beams
Drakh GEG, Neutron Cannon

The point?
The Centauri fleet comes in for a lot of criticism, arguably justified, because the line-abreast-and-trundle-forward, Beam Team attack method, works so well, arguably far too well. It is, arguably, a no- brainer. When you start adding in the tricks and wrinkles that you learn playing other fleets that make you work harder, when you add tactics as well to it, it gets very hard to stop.
The problem is, not much else does. I can't put together a fast attack force from the current Centauri fleet list, not one that I can believe in; the same for carrier force, missile, furball- they fall very easily into the mould of line up and shoot.
Granted, it's a successful mould. It still gets samey after a while. There is enough potential variety in the Centauri armoury, especially if you steal back some of the things that were nicked from them in the first place, to put together a much more interesting take on the Lion of the Galaxy, with more diverse hulls and tactics.

Brakiri are the backbone of the league really, they are the frame the other races fit onto. They can work well with most things.
The Dargan's only speed 10, it's line flanker rather than fast- attack. The only real options are Corvan, Darkner, Vorchan/Vorchat- and is that really going to be as good as a line of Sulust and Prefect?
The Centauri have a Killer App; it's glaringly obvious, and overshadows pretty much anything else you can do with the fleet.
Earthforce have maybe a shade too much flexibility, which is why the three fleet lists; but the Centauri are like a band with guitar, bass, vocals and fifteen drummers.
The potential for a major rewrite is there, to get more diversity, more variety into the fleet, open up the tactical model and make them more interesting to play.

A singular approachj that works isn't terribly bad. as long as u can adapt as others adjust

Sooooo Do the 2 starters for Brakari and abbies make a good starting place?

They seem to contain a nice mix of ships, and many of the ships in the boxes have useful variants too.

The Abbai box gives you a lot of Patrol and Raid ships while the Brakiri fill in the gaps with War, Battle and Skirmish.

Not sure about the abbai ships in the box. Ships you will want out of the abbai would be the Milani, Tiraca, Shyarie.

Problem is that the Milnai is not really better than the Brikorta, a brakiri ship that carries half as many fighters but better ones. Both ships have precise on their main guns. Secondary guns are twin linked vs ap. At the relatively similar number of dice.

Tiraca is a patrol ship so it's limitations become clear pretty quick. Brisaria makes for an interesting choice though in fleets, you have to kill the comm disruptor, but you hate to waste the firepower.

Shyarie fills a gap in the Brakiri line, scouting. No guns but worth a look as com disruptors/scouting is a good mix. Bad part, no stealth unlike other scouts.

Brakiri box is excellent a great base for any league fleet. I would say get the Brakiri box set and add abbai ships individually. If going for looks I admit I love the milani, bimith, tiraca and shyarie. Only one hard to use there is the bimith, real p.i.t.a. to get to function at its best and often doesn't fire a shot in anger. Course it could just be my luck with the darn thing.

Ripple

So ripple what mini mix from League ships would you add to Brakiri?

Would adding Halik and Brokados make them viable alone?

Thanks

Certainly a Halik or two and a Brokados will fill out a Brakiri fleet nicley. The Brokados is a fleet carrier with +1 command, and the Halick a pretty nice Raid choice in the Nova style.

As to a supplement fleet, Vree are always an excellent choice. Their Vaarl Scouts are proabbly the best in the game, and all the ships have Turreted main weapons. They should work particularly well with the Brakiri, as the Brakiri can be used to strip any interceptors the enemy may have, before the Vree hit them with Anti-matter shredders and Torpedoes.

And therein lies my conundrum

the lure of the Brakari supported by some Vree or Dzazi or Abbies

and the overall ship line of the centauri

ARGHHH!!!! decisions
