Burst and Machine Pistols

What is the point? Burst gives +2 damage but is then -2 to hit and hence effect/ damage. Or fire single shot with no penalty and hence gain a +2 effect over firing in Burst (and hence +2 more damage). Burst is actually worse than single shot - the net damage is the same but you are -2 to hit.

Not sure where your numbers are coming from...
From the Core Rulebook:

Burst: Add the Auto score to damage. This uses a
number of rounds equal to the Auto score.

So Auto4 will give +4 damage....and where did you get the -2 to hit?
Don't have access to the Field Manual, so not sure if it's in there...

-2 to hit is in the description of the machine pistol, which is actually Auto 2 not Auto 4.

CSCU Update Assault Pistol pp. 143:

"An autopistol designed to fire bursts of fully-automaticf ire, assault pistols are notoriously inaccurate and suffer DM-2 to all attack rolls when using burst or full auto modes. Users are advised to carry as many extra magazines as they can as the assault pistol burns ammunition very quickly"

Yeah, it is a terrible weapon. Its sole value is in spray n pray with full auto mode. You *can* burst fire with it, but that's a bad decision.

For Bursting I was going to House Rule it that when you burst effect is not added to damage but for every 2-3 points of effect an additional round hits, up to the Burst rating.

If you are hit with three bullets it causes more damage than being hit by one.

You are also more likely to be hit by at least one of the bullets.

Personally, I rule the +1 damage for burst is per damage dice. That would more than offset the -2 damage you would loose from any lower effect number.
