BF:Evo Mercenary army list version 1 now available

Mongoose
I have written a complete mercenary army list, and it can now be found on the mongoose mods yahoo group. If anyone wants to host it on a normal webpage, please tell me (so when I update it they can receive a copy as well).

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mongoose_mods/

It is in the files section under battlefield evo, evo unofficial expansions.

This list can represent a variety of mercenary groups, as well as being a good way to represent warlord forces in Africa. In terms of hitting power it is close to the MEA list, but has some cheaper options and less good AT kit. I think the list will have some problems against heavy armour lists (but if your best tank is a T-55 that is pretty inevitable). The Western themed list will have fewer problems against armour, but mercenaries will find fighting USMC or British forces a challenge, but that is the way it is meant to be, and I have returned to my roots of designing underdog factions.

Fun things in the list include a Hilux with a recoiless rifle option and militia with shotguns. These are an African mercenary option, but if you have redneck with shotgun models, I don't think anyone will stop you using them.

This is the first full modern warfare list I have written, and while I will add air options to try to balance it with the mainstream lists, it is fairly complete as is. What I would like is opinions on it, and people to give it a go. Particularly if I have done anything badly wrong.
The first wave of releases for BF:Evo will hit the shops at the end of the month, and I couldn't help but throw out a fifth faction for people to play with. Once the mercs list is done I'll give another bit player a go.

Just about to have a look :D
For air support you should have something like grenade/nail bomb strikes from cargo planes in true mercenary style :)

Not bad but I would prefer to have seen them as "plug and play" list the weapons and pts in columns to mix and match as needed with some rules for building the units.

i just read it, and am glad you included the protection details... espesially since i have a painted protection team and some trucks.

to expand though, maybe the inclusion of armored suburbans (vehicle of choice in iraq).

thanks for working on this!

Soulman, I was wondering why you made the PKM MG 3d6 but the M60 2d6?

From looking at the current stats available I figured a LMG did 2d6 and heavier ones did 3d6+?

I am no expert on weapons, so maybe the M60 is a lighter type of MG?

PKM - This is a fire on the move mg that you cannot set up.

M-60 and M-249 - These are 2d6 when you fire on the move, but if you take the time to set them up you get 4D6.

Thanks.

Another question, what is the reason the PKM gets 3d6 when firing on the move and the M60 only 2d6?

Sorry about all the questions! The reason i ask is that I am working on a NAM mod and am trying to get my head around the best way of doing weapons i.e. the underlying principles.

Ditto the minimi.

And I also did it that way to keep it consistent with the unpublished Evo stuff you'll be getting later in the year.

Thanks.

For my NAM mod at the moment the M60 does 3d6. Should I therefore change it to 2d6 to keep it in line? I'm not sure it really matters as it is only a mod, but thought I would ask.

out of interest what would the WW2 MG42 do, in your opinion?

The WWII version is treated as being internally consistent, rather than directly comparable to BF:Evo. This makes it a bad example to draw on.

However the MG42 is the MG3 (with standard NATO round) which is in use in BF:Evo and is still better than the MG-60.

For MG60 go for 2D6 on the move and 4D6 set up. For the PKM go for 3D6 and no bonus for setting it up. This means NVA and VC infantry keep going and have no intrinsic bonus for playing defensively, but US forces are rewarded for defensive play.

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

One of the things I like about B:EVo is the different tactics that can come out of such a small differences between units and weapons. On the downside, it means you have to be very careful about any changes you make when creating mods!!

Yes, look at the tactics historically used. In WWII german heavy tank tactics (ie ambush and retrograde through cover) work very well in WWII Evo so far.
And in BF:Evo similar tactics will work on the battlefield with things like Challengers and Abrams, though aircraft will cause severe problems against undefended tanks.

Air Cav was a big part of US tactics in Vietnam, and tunnels and ambushes a big part of Vietnamese tactics. Look at historical forces and get a feel for them.

Saw a program on the Mil Channel last night, there are now over 20,000 PMCs in Iraq.

Dangerous thing.

Frankly, there used to be more. They are the second largest contributor of troops to the occupation.
However some are just security guys, some are less than scrupulous. The problem is that with an asymmetric conflict with no front lines you do see security contractors fighting insurgents.
But things in Iraq aren't as straightforward as they were in Angola, or Sierra Leone, or a lot of other places in Africa.
Even we had our main intervention in Sierra Leone done by mercs, though they were pretty much all ex-British army and we were helping African Union forces the government still managed to make a hash of it public relations wise.
