Beyond the Abyss - Vassal Tournament

Triggy: Basically, if you've played a few games with the most recent version of the rules and feel comfortable with them then go for it.

As i said i am new to not just ACTA but wargaming as a whole. I've only had the revised rule set since march and haven't played many games with them. Previous to that I played a few of games using the starter set rulebook. I have only played against myself but feel fairly comfortable with the rules in general. I do make some beginners mistakes thou.

For example I played my first vassal against myself this weekend (5pt rain narn vs EA) but made silly errors which included moving both starfuries and thunderbolts starfury distances on the first turn, forgetting to fire some fighter weapons a few times, forgetting to use the interceptors on the omega alot and not using the scout trait of the sho'kar during the whole game despite that being the reason I picked it
I think (and hope) part of that is having to think about 2 fleets at once

Triggy: If you are aware of the updated rules (e.g. to Stealth and Fighters) and have access to the ship stats then you'd still be welcome
Ok Vassal has ship stats in properties when you right click of the counter so I've gone by them in the game i played. I have look also at the shipviewers from the players resources thread but not compared them (I assume the ones on vassal are current stats).

Stealth: I have seen talk on this forum about being within 4inches (i think it was) either reduces or gets ride of the trait

Fighters: is that to do with fighters have to be touching the enemy fighter counter to gain +1 to dogfight not just the friendly that instigate its, is that the one? please feel free to correct me.

My main concern is that everyone being ok with having a beginner in the mix

p.s. saw the boresight option in the counters menu but how does it work with the fixed 45 and 90 degree turns in vassal? or did i miss something

Don't worry those aren't just beginner mistakes, I do that kind of thing all the time... still ;)

You missed just a little bit. There is a command (Rotate --- control-R, I think? Alt-R?) which allows for free rotation of the counter. That'll get you your boresight.

And, I think what you saw was a boresight target marker -- for those that have been boresighted. (Unlucky souls.)

yes there is a rotate command (ctrl-R) which for some reason that neither Jay nor myself can figure out has been renamed reset and we cant change its name either.
so look for the reset command then point the ship whatever direction you like :)

Thanks for the reassurance burger :)

, I'll try it in the next few days

i downloaded vassal and ACTA onto my other computer, opened them and ... nothing happened except lots of files popped out. do i have to be connected to the interenet? i couldnt find a vassal install thingy after i unzipped it.

you can run vassel from the site. but somewhere in the folder is the install for it.
the ACTA mod do not unzip. once you have vassal set up, start it then it will give you options like play mod etc. click the play one then select the ACTA zip.file and it will play from there. the ACTA file basically just download and use as is without unzipping.

There's a great "idiot's guide" linked in the first post of this thread - seems pretty thorough and helpful to me.

Fighters moving last in movement phase but attacking first in attack phase, etc. Basically if you feel confident that you'll cope then feel free to enter. As for the mistakes - that's the one bit not to worry about, people will correct you in a friendly way and others make them as well :)

They certainly did for me...As it is I learned to play ACTA(even if my tactics suck ) in number of Vassal games :D

I like the fighters firing first, think thats a good tweak to the rules (which has probably been covered in older threads :) )

I take it I was right about stealth but which is it, within 4inches reduces or gets ride of the trait?

overall I think I'll be ok - will pm katadder my list soon

thanks for all the help guys

If your target is more than 20 inches away, its gains +1 to its stealth.
If your target is within 8 inches, its loses 1pt to its stealth.

Welcome to the game and tourney. :D

How are we handling jump point bombing? Is it considered frowned upon, but kosher, and its cheese factor is to be handled in sportsmanship voting? Or should we (in general, unless abused) not hold that against a sporting opponent? Just wonder how we want to handle a .... delicate subject .... before the tourney starts.

It isn't major, there's only one scenario in 6 possible results where it can happen (Space Superiority)

knowing what i know i would say its not going to be a major thing in this tourney anyway. I would say feel free to do it for those of you who can pull it off good luck to you. its upto your opponents if they think its cheesey (like if someone swarmed bluestars and JPB'd lots for example) but i dont see how it will be much.

down to 2 places now.

I'm with katadder on this - doing it probably shouldn't be considered unsporting but overdoing it (e.g. building a fleet around the tactic) probably could be.

Either way, it's your sportsmanship vote at the end of the day and everyone will have their own personal set of criteria on what they consider sporting and what they consider unfair...if in doubt, ask your opponent :)

Yeah, lists and groups posted on Saturday and as soon as you know who's there, you can arrange and play games.

On that note, I'm up for a game on the Saturday evening-night (UK time) if anyone else wants to as well. Of course, we'll have to wait until we see the groups before we can confirm any games.
