Battle Report (v. short but lots of pics) - Vree vs. Drakh

Hash

Mongoose
Burger and I are in training for the coming Mongoose tournament (1 Battle Choice, 1 Skirmish Choice). We chose Vree and Drakh respectively. Although the scenarios are not revealed, we decided to duke it out mano a mano style with random terrain...he got a dust cloud to hide in. I got nothing to hide behind...oh well!

Burger:
Battle: Drakh Carrier (2 Hvy Raiders, 2 Light Raiders) Skirmish: Light Raider

Hash:
Battle: Xonn
Skirmish: Xeel (4 Tzymm)

Game 1: Many pictures but ended quickly due to my silly moves and Burger's VERY 1st shot destoying my weapons permanently! (6, 4 crit).

Game 2: This Game went much more in my favour as I regained control of the tactical side of my brain and started making him come to me. I was doing quite well and the Tzymm were being quite lethal so was quite confident even though Burger managed to get ANOTHER 6, 4 crit on my smaller Xeel carrier with his 2nd shot of the game, preventing it from firing. (It was an initiative sink from then on.)

Nevertheless, the Xonn was making short work of the raiders killing most of them (with the assistance of the Tzymm). Sadly as the balance was going my way Burger decided to pull out yet ANOTHER 6, 4 Crit completely destroying my weapons...at this point I gave up :(

Good games (well the 2nd one was) but with only two ships both sides are MUCH more susceptible to crits (except for Drakh that have a heck of a lot more than two ships!)

I also want to cast my vote on the quality of those counters, Burger. Are they foam card? They look a little thick to be normal cardstock. Moer like foamboard..

Thanks guys :) The Drakh do look pretty spiffy, well the Raiders at least, not too sure about the carrier but hey it does resemble the metal one vaguely. I need to find a better mounting method though, they kept falling over.

They are made from card stock, printed and glued back-to-back for double thickness. I'll make the plans public... after the tournanment ;)

Blimey Burger! You're getting really quite good at this whole 3d counter malarkey. If it wasnt for the inevitable legal issues they most likely incur from Wizkids I'd say this might be the way to go for Mongoose to replace the miniatures line (or at least tide it over till they can start making them again).

As you say, the carrier looks a bit 'random brick with drakh colour schemey' but those raiders definitely are the dogs proverbials. Hell they look better than some folks painted miniatures :D

Good work burger nice pictures very interesting.

At some point I was going to make a mothership, which actually opens and stores all the raiders for transport

since raiders are rather flat V type ships you could have slot onto the outside of the mothership?

unless you mean drakh in that case nevermind lol

Well only one weapon arc is a built-in weakness of Vree, supposedly ... it certainly was in these games! I was definitely going to lose the second game even with the Xeel disabled, until I got the 3rd 6-4!

Though even then Hash would have beaten me on VPs, assuming he managed to run away off the table. 20VP to him for destroying 4 skirmish ships. 6VP to me for him wiithdrawing both and 5VP for holding ground. So he'd win 20 vs 11.

That for me more than anything is the one BIG flaw with the ACTA system (not counting the odd ship here and there that are too good/too weak). Crits are too random, too easy to get and potentially too devastating. If theyre gonna be THAT nasty it should be harder to get them (or at least more heavily stacked towards the less nasty types) or just weaker in general if theyre gonna be as frequent.

All too often I have played or read about a game where the game was going really well or was really close until one player rolled a lucky crit which basically decided the game, not wanting to go too off topic but for me having luck play THAT big a role in the game takes alot of the fun out of it (its for that very reason that I've always prefered WFB to 40K and Full Thrust to ACTA).

Looking forward to those ship plans though Burger, dont actually have a drakh fleet and always fancied giving them a go, and I HATE using counters :D

your telling me I was playing vorlons against ISA my friend was a crit machine I might as hav enot played just about every single ship in my fleet got the weapons offline crit every turn the only ship fireing was the heavy cruiser cause it has two weapons everything was shut down the whole game. i could have had my ships stay in the same spot and it would have ended the same no ships able to fire.

Maybe General Hash will be a little more humble now.

Why do you say this when you know I shall hunt you down and make you suffer for it?! Do you think I would really give up my advantage?

You will all suffer for your defiance!

Plus I would have won the 2nd game on VPs if I wasn't tired. The crits were awful but be fair, Drakh have a lot of precise beams...they're GOING to get those crits! (I just wish they weren't all 6 4 destroy all my weapons forever and ever crits!)

Drakh are normally fairly good at ignoring fighters (Dodge and GEG is a VERY powerful combo for survivability) but the Tzymm still managed to punch above their weight...I can't imagine the nightmare multiple Xeel war carriers would inflict in a normal 5 pt raid game!

No, a fleet full of Shrunnkas filled with their hordes of Breaching Pods might be the Drakh nightmare.

Intercept that? With what?

While the GEG is very powerful versus fighters, virtually no one field 'em during the pickup games if they can avoid 'em; those that do have fighters that are easily capable of piercing the GEG (the Thorun with its DD fighters are a good selection; so are Sky Serpents and -- tada! -- the Tzymm.) you have little answer for. You have almost no answer for Breaching pods except to run away, if you still can.

The GEG is no substitute for an interceptor-fighter, or, at least, some Antifighter. Somewhere. Anywhere.

Of course, the Drakh have some of their own high-grade Brie in other places (such as, I think, the overdone Amu.).

GEG is the ultimate protection fom the Gaim's e-mines, though. Lots of tubes with a few AD each, can't crit... GEG 1 is usually enough to save raides from any damage. And, they can dodge the suicide fighters. So I think Drakh are one of the better races, to fight Gaim with.

Until May 1st, that is........ after then, who knows!
