Annic Nova

Hey there,

Completely non-official, gamer-related question this :)

Has anyone statted up the ANNIC NOVA under our Traveller rules? Just wanting to see if anyone has already done it before I duplicate effort :)

I don't think anyone's ever managed to stat her up under Classic Traveller rules, never mind Mongoose!

If I remember it right, one would need solar panels to collect the energy
required by the jump drive and batteries to store this energy. It seems
that the volume required to power the Annic Nova's jump drive in this
way would leave little room for the ship's interior as described in the ad-
venture, so I doubt that it is possible to create plausible stats with Mon-
goose Traveller (or almost any other starship design system). :(

I built it using FFS a few years back...

I had to bolt in a TL16+ Battery to hold enough charge to power the ship (CAlled it an Ancient Artifact) and hand-waved the fact that its Jump drive doesnt use fuel...

If I remember right the Solar Collector had to be a bit larger as well...( over a km in diameter..)

Ill look and see if I have my notes.

I don't have any stats but I did these of a re-imagined AN:

Nice Guardnacho!

One nice feature of the Annic Nova - its deckplans closely matched the illustration. Though the deck plans should state the cargo deck and upper decks are the same hieght as the pinnace is round (4.5 meters) and they only add to about 400 tons...

For me Annic Nova's stats have always been and should remain a leap of faith. Square pegs and round holes are just part of the mystery.

If anything it should be slightly more alien. I always run it with unlit rooms that upon closer inspection are actually lit in infra-red light. Water in bottles that tastes slightly of bromide. Those little touches really add an edge to the scenario.

I always tend to change mass requirements for things as they move away from imperial norm. Having a Jump drive that is half the size it "should" be and a solid rocket manoeuvre drive always freaks players out.

Annic Nova (From Double Adventure #1, GDW 1980)
Free Trader (Non-Standard Classified Type NS18): Using an unorthodox 600 ton frame and hull, (Actually displaces 900 tons)...The ship has 8 staterooms (of non-standard sizes), ...there are no low berths. The ship has two jump drives, (Jump-1, and jump-2 respectively) , but may not sum their power. There are no maneuver drives (The pinnaces may act as tugs to a minor extent); there is no power plant. A stellar collector absorbs and collects energy for internal power and jump drives. Two single turrets each mount a single laser cannon. Cargo bays hold up to 150 tons. The computer is a non-standard model equivalent to a model/3 (Cx-7), but with nearly three times the mass (TL9, genius). The ship is not streamlined.
Two 40 ton pinnaces travel in trailing positions. Each holds 12 tons of fuel (?). One is equipped to carry four passengers for relatively long periods of time; the other can shutle up to 16 passengers or 12 tons of cargo. (Note: why fuel capacity on pinnaces?) I used the standard Pinnace in GT.

Built at TL 10

Note: All GT components have had their Fusion slice removed.
Components marked with a * are detailed at the end. Cost for this design is irrelevant.

Custom Components:

I designed the ship as closely to the published version as possible. The Energy Bank is a TL16 design which must be an ancient artifact, or something...(The ship is essentially a HUGE energy bank and solar collector with a small habitable crew section.)
Note that I omitted Fire suppression and other “inconsequential” equipment as not displacing, or weighing enough to make a difference in the final design. Due to the nature of the ship, I deemed cost not to be worth the effort of calculating. (Its rather astronomical anyway..)

J-Drive
Standard GT Jump Drive w/o fuel requirements. Jump capacity is rated for 900 dtons.
Power requirements: 270MWS and 360 MWS respectively for each of the two drives. This results in a total of 381,024,000MW for back to back jumps over a 14 day period.

TL 16 rechargeable Energy Bank 441,825,752MW
This assumes a total of 381,024,000MW to run the jump drives for 14 days, 133,400MW to power the lasers for a total of 100 shots each, and 133,400MW to power other ship functions for 60 days. (This assumes an operating ceiling of 11.7MWS for life support, computers, and all other ship functions other than lasers and jump drives.) Warning: excessive use of ships lasers will reduce the endurance of life support functions.

Solar Collector This is a TL10 retractable array, using a 19,452,928sf surface area super-light frame, with advanced materials to support a 9,726,464sf (1km diameter) TL8 solar collector. At 1 AU distance from a class M V star, the collector will generate 389 MW/s, effectively recharging the ships capacitors in 13 days. At 2 AU, typical jump distance, it will produce only 97 MW/s recharging in 52 days. Typical distances will vary, as will actual recharging times.
It takes one hour to deploy the solar collector and the ship may not maneuver during the process or risk damaging the collector.
It has 389,058HP.

Bridge: Reduced computer to TL9, but added Genius option. Same complexity, but bigger and more expensive. Net: +6 cf +389.2 lbs +1.95MCr (Not a major
difference!) Includes Hi-res holo display.

Crew: Pilot/Navigator, Chief Engineer, two mechanics, medic, 2 small craft pilots, 2 gunners.

Design: 600 ton USL hull, DR100, 2 single TL10 Laser Turrets, 6 Jump modules (J-2), 9 Jump modules (J-3), 194 Solar Panel modules, 388 Energy Bank modules, 1 Basic Bridge, 8 Staterooms, 1 Utility, 3 Shops, 1 Sickbay, 3 External Cradle modules, 150 Cargo, 2 40 Ton Pinnace’s.

Statistics: Emass: 8023, Lmass 8773, Cost: Unique, HP: 45k. HT: 5, Size Modifier: +10.

Performance: Accel: .08/.07Gs.

One or both of the Pinnaces may be swivelled, and thrust applied in order to orient the ship. For travel of any great distance, a pinnace must be maneuvered to the aft end of the ship and magnetically moored. (Aparrently the external grapples will not support the stress.)
The canopy collects stellar radiation and stores it in ships accumulators (Energy Bank). The only way to extend the canopy is by controls on the drive deck or observation dome. They Accumulators can store enough energy to power each jump drive once, fire each laser 100 times, as well as maintain internal life support under normal conditions for 60 days.

Actually this won't work in the MGT universe. In original Traveller fuel was consumed to generate power, which was channeled into the jump drive (Lanthanum(?) plates and zuchai drive crystals come to mind from some previous reference). But in MGT, the fuel is pumped out around the ship to generate a hydrogen bubble that you travel through jumpspace in.

So a battery-powered starship won't be able to jump unless somebody else is supplying it with drop tanks... which buggers up the jump mass and other requirements.

Unless it is using a principle of Jump drive not yet encountered by the vessels of the 3I.

After all, Annic Nova did originate somewhere in the vicinity of Victoria / Lanth, a well known Ancient outpost ...
