Aircraft post Order of Battle

Just starting to get into playing the game; even though I've had the rule books for a while now, and I was just wondering what exactly aircraft (as in those on ships with the Aircraft X trait) do since the release of Order of Battle. From how I've read it you can use one of them as an ASW plane but you have to declare that at the start of the battle and you can only use one in that roll. So, have I got that right and if so what do the others do or if I have got it wrong please tell me what exactly they can do now?

They are spotter planes but no longer go on the board. so there abstractly used for things like attacks over 30. meaning they affect the game but you dont see it.

In campaign games they can also be used as scouts.
