Aiming + Aiming for the Kill

Just making sure this is a legitimate tactic: spend 9 minor action aiming to get +6DM and +6 damage using Aiming (for 6 minor actions) and Aiming for the Kill (for 3 minor actions).

Which book does 'Aiming for the Kill' come from?

No other action can be performed while 'aiming' and it already gives the potential for higher damage (from effect) - though Aiming for the Kill shouldn't necessarily qualify as another action, so I can see it both ways.

Personally I'd probably rule them either limited (6 minor actions combined) or mutually exclusive... as the 'Kill' aim is probably targeting a very specific vulnerable spot for more damage - meaning the hit is more difficult (i.e. the general aiming can be thrown off such as a Neck shot versus a torso shot). But I'm not familiar with the rule - maybe it already penalizes the hit?

A lot would depend on the weapon & ammo.

Why would this play a factor?

Example: How do you get +6 damage from .22 short wad-cutter?

Shoot them in the nadgers.

You wouldn't even get +6 damage with that round hitting there. Maybe in the eye but, that's about it.

Point being, a bigger round from a more easily aimed weapon is going to give you a larger plus on damage for the +6 DM. It's a horrible oversimplification.

The original Core Rule Book rule is "aiming" (+1 DM on 'to hit' per minor action with a maximum of +6).

"Aiming for the kill" came soon afterwards in Mercenary (+2 to damage per minor action aiming with a maximum of +6, i.e., maximum of 3 minor actions).

It's fairly clear from the wording of "Aiming for the kill" that it is a special case of aiming and that the aiming 'to hit' bonus is not included. That is, they should be considered as completely separate tasks. Thus, you can't aim for 6 minor actions (not shooting at the end of it) and then aim for the kill for 3 minor actions, finally shooting once and getting +6 to hit AND +6 damage.

i.e., per squeeze of the trigger you can EITHER aim (to hit bonus) OR aim for the kill (damage bonus) but NOT BOTH.

Just spoke to the bodyguard of one of the local 'wise guys' (who shall remain un-named) as he stood guarding the doorway of one of the ubiquotus private clubs in my neighborhood and he said:

"You use a .22 to the back of da head, just behind his ear."

What kind of gun?

"A Ruger with a Tactical Systems receiver and a silencer."
"Dat answer your question?"

Yep. I have a Ruger .22 Bull Barrel, stainless. http://www.ruger.com/products/2245BullBarrel/models.html

It shoots .22LR rounds. Behind the ear would go all the way through.

.22 shorts (wadcutter) are a different animal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadcutter
