Tactical Traveller?

John Hogan

Mongoose
Greetings,
I hope this is the right place to post this. I haven't posted on this forum. I/We are looking for tactical miniatures or tabletop game that I can tailor to the Traveller universe. I have all the old classics.. I have tried BITS "At Close Quarters" and Star Grunt II, to name a few. We have settled on a version of TSR and SPI's old game Sniper with the Bug Hunt Supplement... It has a D6 mechanic with minor modifiers that roughly equate to traveller skills, and with some minor tweaking, it seems to be working. I was curious if anybody had any suggestions, comments, or input before I crank this thing out and we start rolling dice.

We just use the core rules, the Field Catalogue's knockback rules, a grid or rulers and terrain.
Longtime wargaming group and it works just fine. One of our group adapted Snapshot, but his campaign didn't last long.
Also modify artillery and grenades using rules adapted from Battlefield Evolution. (Old Mongoose game)
(Designate the target, roll to hit. If good, roll 2d and a direction(top point of a d10 if no scatter die), scatter it that way, then the player rolls higher of skill or effect and moves it back. On a fail, roll higher of 2d or effect, then players get their skill in dice to move back.)

Check out Striker, a 15mm minis wargame for Classic Traveller.
My apologies, I should’ve been a little more specific. Striker is a larger scale than what we’re looking for. We are looking for something akin to the MG2 Specialist supplement… Therefore individually based and more of a squad to platoon versus platoon to several companies level that Striker represents… Striker is good and I likely threw you off when I mentioned SGII. I should’ve kept that out of the post… but thanks for the input that is appreciated

Classic Traveller had two different tactical boardgames, Snapshot and Azhanti High Lightning. Both used an action point system, but this being CT they are similar but different (slight aside as I attempted to kitbash the two into one unified whole I discovered where the MegaTraveller combat system came from :)).
Another difference is Snapshot uses the old LBB:1 combat matrices (although it does have all the LBB:4 weapons included), while AHL introduced an armour value and penetration system that was adapted to Striker (and then again with some changes to MegaTraveller).

Sigtygg,

I'm so old that I remember buying Snapshot and Mayday for my birthday when I was probably 13 or 14. So, I'm familiar with all of the old titles, including Azhanti High Lightning. I have them all in my collection... They just aren't working. I read on another board that people have successfully used Five Parsecs From Home.... But it's just not quite crunchy enough for me. It's a fantastic game, and I really like it, but it's just not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks again for the input.

John

I remember getting Azhanti High Lightning way back when, alas never got a chance to play it.

I'm well aware that favourite skirmish wargame ruleset is an intensely personal thing, so you may well have arrived at the best option for you.
But some other SF options could include:
Infinity
the 5150 series from Two Hour Wargames
the Squad Hammer/Chrome Hammer series from Nordic Weasel (you've already mentioned his Five Parsecs)
Renegade Scout series from Nordic Weasel
Starport Scum series from Nordic Weasel
Galactic Heroes from Wiley Games
Planet 28 from Mammoth Miniatures
BLKOUT/In Country (INX)
Horizon Wars: Zero Dark

There is also a 'golden age' of modern or post-apocalyptic skirmish wargame rules right now with many potential options to explore like:
Haywire
Contact Front
Zona Alfa
Frontline Heroes Modern Warfare
Spectre series
Black Powder Red Earth
Black Ops

FUBAR, a one-page skirmish wargame, has Traveller-style alien supplements.

Stargrave is worth a look at. It's warband skirmish scale, ideal for a ship crew vs danger.

You don't need to use the warband building rules to make use of the combat system (but you will need some d20s. It operates on opposed d20 rolls). Just map over the players to heroes with appropriate abilities. The campaign sourcebooks are also quite suitable to use to set up Traveller adventures, and it's all sensibly priced.

The official 28mm multipart plastic with supplementary metal minatures range is EXTREMELY suitable for Traveller, even if you don't like the rules.
