ACTA's new competition

I'll buy a few as a sad addict for toy spaceships, play the game twice, get bored, go back to ACtA and join Voronesh and others working on the conversion...

Mon Calamari....calamari....squid....Vorlons! The much needed Vorlon Raid, Skirmish and Patrol ships....

And all the Empire stuff is Advanced EA....sorted.

well they did launch a few but not even a full squadron. and why not launch them all? surely you want all rebels dead, and if you kill the base the rebel fighters will just go into hyperspace and form a new HQ with other rebels so kind of pointless exercise. kill all the rebels not just their current base.

Lord Vader called 2 to go with him but the order was never given.

No, just hundreds of TIE fighters and defence towers covering the important runs into critical areas...the question is will they incorporate the possibility of a single fighter taking it down (however unlikely that would be)?

The newest edition of Twilight Imperium has 'War Spheres' which resemble (but not in a copyright infringing way, of course!) a certain sci-fi space station of unusual size. they even added a rule allowing a lucky shot to take it down, but I believe it requires throwing a lot of fighters at it to ahve even a remotely good chance...
They're called "War Suns", and there is a tech advance for them available called "Star of Death" lol. That game rocks, btw, for people that haven't played it. In fact, I haven't played a bad Fantasy Flight game as yet. :D

Ummm, why have they paired a Mon Cal Cruiser against a Super Star Destroyer?

I mean barring any suicidal rebel fighter pilots, surely the Mon Cal is going to gets its stern handed to it on a plate?

Nick

Thats a Republic Star Defender or something like that. It is a Mon Cal ship, but it is a super star destroyer sized one from the NJO era. Leave it to the Republic to design a ship to counter an Imperial one 40 years after they first entered service

Especially when they aren't even used anymore

You know, really it's a shame that Lucasarts gave such a crappy company the license to mini games. I am actually working on my own ruleset and to-scale mini line for a Star Wars game similar to B5 but better(IMO) in an attempt to sway them away from Wizkids. Scratch that. I was working on it until I heard about this game about a month ago, and since then said: 'screw it'.

but carries 24 squadrons of fighters at least, thats 288 fighters tho for some reason they launched about 4.

the order to launch starfuries was never given er tie fighters

Not in Jedi, but the order was given in Star Wars :ANH

Luke: I got a little cooked, but i'm OK (If you don't remember that scene then go and watch the film again, now  )
[Cut to interior Death Star]
Officer:We count 30 rebel ships Lord Vader, but they're so small they're evading our turbo-lasers.
Vader: We'll have to destroy them ship to ship, get the crews to their fighters.

And we definitely see some fighters in action before Vader launches, not many admittedly but some.

Lucasarts still gave Wizards the license, did it not? REgardless of whether or not it was paid for, a license was still given.

The reason WotC have the licence is because they are owned by Hasbro and Hasbro are the largest toy and game manufacturer on the planet.

Its purely a matter of economics and how much Hasbro were prepared to pay and meet the licencing requirements.

WotC used to be a pretty decent company right up until Hasbro bought them out and demasculated their products into the CMG stuff you see today. Its an interesting point that five years ago Hasbro also showed a very strong interest in GW when their shares were vulnerable. Regardless of what you may think of GW, being taken over by Hasbro would do the hobby as a whole no favours at all. They are a very predatory company when it comes to snapping up popular IP and stripping it down to something a three year old can badger mommy and daddy about in Toys-R-Us.

and new the new Holy Crusade Expansion pack for Warhammer 40K! 30 new clix figures, including a limited edition Necrarch when you enter a sweepstakes!!!. (Shakes head, as I wish no company, even THAT company, that fate)

Can the Narn/Rebel alliance take out the evil SSD, flanked by Marathons and Warlocks?

Maybe. Howver.....the death star then finds itself enveloped in theis wierd cloud.....

The whole end of star wars is a bit random, if you start looking for plot holes (I mean it's a pipe directly to the reactor! Put a grill over it!)

I much prefer the version on How It Should Have Ended.com:
http://www.howitshouldhaveended.com/Divx links/Star_Wars.html

And no, I've never been a fan of random miniature games - I'd like to plan and pick a fleet; and I enjoy painting them myself, thank you.

Well though I DO prefer 'normal' buy fleet paint fleet etc wargames, I do also enjoy the random collectible style game as long as you take them for what they are, quick play games without much depth. If you approach them with expectations of a complex game of fleet maneuver etc your liable to be disapointed :P

Oh and incidentally Locarno, that 'how it should have ended' site is awsome :P

I thought it was superb....

It's what I would like to have happened, anyway:
"Hmm......we have a weapon that can destroy planets.....and there's a planet in the way....I sense a convergence of options..."

Tarkin had just as much style in Vader in the first film..shame they killed him off.

It's Peter Cushing ffs! The man is (was anyway) evil incarnate and just about the best villain actor on earth (though Christopher Lee is good too, shame his star wars character had such a lame sounding name (yes I know it means darkness or something in Japanese, I dont care it still sounds stupid :P)

Nope, by definition no. Granted yes, given no as Wizards paid for it. Yes, I'm being pedantic here, but it's a very important difference in this instance.

Interestingly, I believe Cushing's only "evil" role was as Tarkin.

As to the game, I just finished reading the rules and I find myself in the "beer and pretzels" camp. A fun game, I've already got my local store setting aside a starter box and two boosters, and we're going to have a release party to break open our new toys and try them out.

Now the question is, can I get a square map big enough to recreate the battle at Endor?

1 thing, that planet that was in the way... I was pretty sure that WAS Yavin. You know, a gas giant... a star.... many times larger than yavin 4... many many many many times larger? You know, the larger something is, the more energy required to destroy it. Just a thought....

Anyway, who did Christopher Lee play?Tyrannus, right?

Probably more detail than needed, but.....

ss2.gif

So, assuming Yavin and Jupiter are about equal in size and that the rebel-base is on an Earth-sized moon, I think it would be kinda like shooting a .22 at a rhino.

Oh, I said star didn't I, take that back, it's just a gas giant...

Anyway, according to this: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/posting.php?mode=reply&t=22326&sid=fbdbe8652d8f024b93edf197658d4da6

(read the quote at the top), Yavin is a lot larger than Jupiter. A lot lot larger than Jupiter. 'By a very slim margin' suggests that it's probably about a quarter of the suns size, perhaps even half, which makes it more like shooting a land raider(I assumed by rhino you meant the tank, because a .22 could indeed kill a rhino, it's unlikely but possible) with a squirt gun.

Christopher Lee did indeed play Tyranus but I was refering to his 'non sith' name, 'Count Dooku'.....

And peter cushing played quite a few characters in the old hammer horror movies that were not TECHNICALLY evil but were pretty nasty nonetheless (witch buring psyhotic sorts etc).
