I had a player at one of my convention demo games pose a question, that I wanted to get a ruling on. His ship was heavily damaged (think it was crippled, 2-3 pts away from destruction), and he had a couple escalating criticals. He wanted to be able to forgo the Damage Control rolls so that his ship would be destroyed (possibly blowing up near the enemy, whom he wanted to damage).
I couldn't find anything in the rules saying one MUST make the rolls, and frankly I can see the situation being so dire that the crew is hitting the escape pods instead of trying to make one final attempt to save the ship (ie, skip the Damage control roll). So I allowed him to skip the roll, and though the criticals did not escalate, they might have and destroyed the ship.
It's one of those not forbidden but against the spirit of the rule vs letter of the rule things, and if we could get a ruling it would be appreciated.
Thanks.
