A Game with a Contemporary Setting

AlphaStrike

Mongoose
Mongoose has fantasy settings sewn-up with RQ2/Legend, and science fiction with Traveller...but what about something closer to home?

I, for one, love flitting between genres when I change from one game to another. It helps establish a different ambience - new setting, new rules, new characters, and so on.

It seems that there is a gap in the 'goose's line-up when it comes to contemporary settings. I wouldn't mind too much whether it was horror, spy or magic-themed - or something really new and inventive - I'd just like to see a system set in the here and now.

Thanks a bunch - now having flash-backs to D20 modern... :(

There is a couple of good RPG's out there that are set in the here and now - Just not by Mongoose.

That sounds like a really good idea, it would open up a lot of possible licenses for C20/21st ish settings. But only if the basic rule system was flexible enough to deal with spy/military/zombie/other horror mechanics.

There is certainly something 'zeitgeisty' about zombies at the moment. They're everywhere. That could provide inspiration for a sourcebook that would slot into a generic modern-day rules set.

There's also been a steady shift towards the same sort of scenario, but with alien invasion as a backdrop. What these seem to have in common is the theme of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events, which could translate well to an rpg.

Are flashbacks to D20 Modern especially painful for you?

I never played it myself...

More laughable than painful now – just having to deal with a rulesworth
