Yes but if the EA brings an Avenger then hes realying ENTIRELY on 8 flights of TBolts to make up the antiship capabilities of an Omega or a Marathon.

Really, in my oppinion the NASTIEST fighter fleet EA can pull off is if they play 3rd Age and spam Nova's loaded with T-Bolts. In a 5 point raid game thats 20 Thunderbolts and 5 Novas worth of broadsidey doom. HOWEVER:

The centauri could just field 5 Sullusts and obliterate those 5 Novas in about 3 turns. Sure they would take fighter attack but if they use ALL their non beam weapons on the T-Bolts they WILL drop them sooner or later, and Sullusts are hull 6 with interceptors. T'Bolts aint gonna hurt them much. If the Novas want to acutally LAUNCH those fighters they cant APTE to close faster (frankly Id bet theyll lose 2 or 3 of the Novas before they can get more than 2 or 3 flights out anyway and it wouldnt surprise me if they get wiped out before they can get the majority of their weapons to bear.

Except that the Sullust is Hull 5. Again the novas will get the fighters out if there is any terrain between them and the Sullusts or if they have a decent amount of space between them and the Centauri. With Scramble, Scramble, they should be able to get most if not all of them out.

Even if they do (and I got the hull value wrong (though bear in mind that could just as easily be 5 PREFECTS)) I simply dont rate even 20 TBolts against a FLEET.

We can argue this point to infinity but the simple fact remains that no amount of arfuing will ever convince me that the Thunderbolt is an unfair advantage. Ive experimented with EA fighter ad infinitum (against Centauri too) and not once have they ever proved to be more than 'a nuisance')

well in my hull 4 EA fleet against the minbari the 10 starfury flights I had launched won the game for me, killing a torotha in one turn, crippling both teshlans, as well as some good hits on the tinashi.
fighters are extremely useful when the enemy cant fire back, or has bigger targets to fry.

but they can prove more than a nuisance. get 10 t-bolts around a teshlan, it probably wont get to fire its mini beams back at you. get your 20 t-bolts from the nova example behind the prefects/sullusts and they cant fire at you either.
if 40Ad and another 40AD AP is so poor why bother with a nova at all? i mean they dont have anywhere near that firepower alone or in one arc with all 5 of them firing. a t-bolt wing effectively doubles the number of AD a nova has to fire on a target.

I believe you have a valid history lesson for this conversation -- Thunderbolts being the offensive main point of the battle against a solid fleet, against (what I hope is) a caliber player, in a tourney environment.

Chicago V, 5 Skirmish, EA vs. Dilgar, totally at my expense.

It was 1 Targrath, 2 Omelos, 1 Ochliavita vs. 1 Nova and 8 Hermes. The Nova did virtually nothing; The Hermes contributed, but the 12 Thunderbolts were the end-all be-all of that fight!

Davesaint, regale those who were not there of your win (it's a little painful for me to recall fully....).

LOL Are you still bitter about that? I mean 12 t-bolts killed a Targrath outright, and I think Both Omelos, with help from the hermes, if I remember.

It was my closest fight of the day. The nova did nothing. Wound up taking a 4-6 weapons crit and a speed 0 no SA crit. It might have done a whopping 3 points of damage, but the t-bolts it brought were the Heros of Maxia. :mrgreen:

It was the only battle I didn't win 20-0 dang you CZ. It actually cost me the tournament as Prelude's fleet won all of his battles 20-0. Dang Minbari.
