2300AD TL

I looked at the preview for 2300AD and saw that the ground car uses a TL 12. I wonder how the TL will work in the game, I know the setting doesn't support laser weapons and some other sci-fi tech. The equipment section looks to be about thirty pages long so maybe it will be covered there.

The other thing I wondered about tech is cybertech. I've read that 2300AD started out without much cybertech but this version appears to have more of it. Is cybertech a "realistic" tech? I just wonder how it will fit next to beanstalks and helicopters. Cyborgs have also seem a bit over the top to me but maybe the tech will be more subtle here.

There is some cyber tech, relatively low-key, though, with no net-running. TL ranges from 8-12, with most core world products being TL11-12. TL 12 is cutting-edge stuff, and TL13 is available at the prototype level. Weapons include conventional caseless weapons, binary-propellants, gauss rifles, laser weapons, plasma guns, and sonic stunners.

Why no netrunning? It was in the Earth/Cybertech sourcebook (with a distictly anachronistic feel, granted - DOS towers indeed!) Netrunning was a key component of the Deathwatch Program and less so, but still important in Rotten to the Core.

First, thanks Colin for answering my various questions. You may be able to guess I'm highly interested in 2300 AD having missed it the first time around.

I see that the original 2300 AD has laser weapons but they weren't used much. I'm assuming this time around will be the same.

Glad cyber tech isn't too over the top (I have Rogue Trader for that!). I'm also okay with no net-running since that seems to become a separate game/genre. I've read how the Earth books changed the feel slightly of 2300 AD and I'm glad the default is set like the original rules. I'm sure net-running could be added in for those who want it but I'm glad to not have to pull it out.

Actually lots of "lasers" in 2300AD.

Yes firearms are considered more common - most nations have a firearm as standard issue, tanks use Mass Drivers instead of plasma or laser canons for their big guns.

But, laser weapons of some sort are seen nearly everywhere - Lasers are possibly the most common weapons on spacecraft, laser rifles are expensive but standard issue in elite units, and don't forget plasma guns. They are nick-named "plasers" in 2300AD since they are described as a combination laser/plasma weapon; the jet of plasma rides the laser to it's target. Plasma guns are common on vehicles and have pretty much replaced the machinegun as the squad-sized support weapon of infantry.

Netrunning, would be the confluence of a true Virtual Reality experience combined with sophisticated hacking through puzzles and games. Much as it was in the original conception of hacking. Matrix on Maximum Overdrive.

I imagine with integral neural nets feeding information in the Core systems. The Augmented Reality programs of the 24 century would be all about pushing away things rather than breaking into systems. For all the time, the software is trying to hack the human rather than the other way around. So, says a demented cyborg...you will know when you read the book.
