1e HG Capital Ship Design Example Step 8 80 TL 11 Particle Beam Triple Turret Cost

Hello again,

In 1e CRB/MRB p. 111 the cost of a Triple Turret is MCr1 and the Particle Beam turret weapon's cost is MCr4. A triple turret requires 1 ton of space for the fire control system.

Per 1e HG Capital Ship Design Example Step 8 p. 71 the hull mounts 80 Tech level 11 triple Particle Beam turrets with accurate and
high yield special features. Each particle beam now costs MCr8. Total is 80 tons and MCr 2,000. 540 hardpoints remain.

Stepping through the math:
Tons = 80 x 1 ton for a triple turret = 80 tons of hull space allocated for the turrets a match.
Cost as shown in the text for 80 particle beams: 80 x 8 = MCr640

I do not believe that the cost of the triple turrets are include. 80 x MCr1 = MCr80

Cost = A single particle beam MCr4 + turret MCr1 doubled reflecting the three levels of improvements to the particle beam weapon increasing the cost to MCr8 + turret MCr1 = MCr9. For 80 particle beam triple turrets the cost is 80 x 9 = MCr720.

My cost is off by MCr1,280.

Where did MCr2,000 come from as calculated in the example?

Morning PDT AndrewW and ShawnDriscoll,

Thank you both for your replies to my cost question for the particle beam weapons mounted in a triple turret from the capital ship design example in 1e HG.

AndrewW I can believe that the government contractor overcharged and paid some of the credits to either the person handling the contract and/or some other Imperial official.

Apparently the
It came from older printings of the game.
as ShawnDriscoll points out means that the errata slipped through the cracks for over seven years. I really wished I had stuck with my review of the 1e design rules back in 2008 and 2009 instead of trying to build a design of my own in the fly.

The next question is:

Is my cost calculation for the particle beam turrets correct based on 1e design rules?

Not exactly. The change is that you can only mount a single particle beam in a turret, but this does need to be a triple turret.

Yes.

1e Traveller HG Errata the sixth entry for Page 47 of the official corrections for Book 2: High Guard states

Only one particle beam may be fitted to a turret, but this must be a triple turret

Okay, I have figured out how the 1e HG Capital Ship Design Example for the particle beams in turrets cost MCr2,000 and was not caught by the 1e Traveller HG errata.

Prior to the errata there was no mention that only a single particle beam weapon would fit in a triple turret.

80 x 3 particle beam weapons x MCr4 x 2 the cost for being an advanced system = 240 x 4 x 2 = 960 x 2 = MCr1920
80 x Triple Turret cost MCr1 = MCr80

Total Weapon system cost = MCr1920 + MCr80 = MCr2,000

Yes.

My working through the 1e HG Capital Ship Design Example to step 8 appears to have uncovered issues that the official correction in Traveller 1e HG Errata overlooked and actually generated.

1. The official correction in Traveller 1e HG Errata for Step 3 used the incorrect total fuel tonnage of 37,500 which altered the Running Total for Tons and Price. Using the total fuel tonnage of 33,750 results in Step 3's Running Total and Price of 24,256.25 tons and MCr35,223.1875 being correct.

2. 1e HG PDF Capital Ship Design Example Step 4 Bridge Cost of MCr150 was supported in the official correction in Traveller 1e HG Errata, unfortunately the costs for the command bridge and holographic displays apparently did not get checked with the 1e HG rules. Spacecraft Options p. 44 Command Bridge costs 50% more than a conventional bridge. The 1e HG PDF Step 4 has the command bridge cost as MCr2,250. If the rule on p. 44 is correct the command bridge cost should be the conventional bridge cost of 150 + 75 = MCr225 not MCr2,250. Holographic Displays add 25% to the cost of the bridge. According to the example both the conventional and command bridges have holographic controls. Tallying the conventional bridge cost of MCr150 + the command bridge cost of MCr225 = MCr375 x .25 = 93.75. The armored bulkheads tons and cost are correct. Step 4's Total cost changes to MCr35,728.3375 which changes the Running Total for Cost for every other Step.

3. Step 7 the combined cost for the four cutters and two pinnaces in the text is MCr152 and the Summary So Far table for the Cost of Small Craft is MCr112.

4. Step 8 did not correct the cost calculation for the particle beam turrets to reflect change that the triple turrets contains only one weapon.

5. The Traveller 1e HG errata document has the entry that "In Step 8, add the following costs: 2,880 Torpedoes = MCr14.4, 6,000 missiles = MCr90, and 12,000 sandcaster barrels = MCr6." The cost MCr90 for 6,000 missiles appears to be incorrect.
According to 1e CRB/MRB p. 111 the missile cost is for 1ton which is 12 missiles. Twelve basic missiles are Cr15,000 or MCr0.015, twelve smart missiles are Cr30,000 or MCr0.03, and twelve nuclear missiles are Cr45,000 or MCr0.045.

Since twelve missiles = 1 ton I'll use the missile tonnage to calculate cost.

Basic missile MCr = 500 tons x MCr0.015 = MCr7.5
Smart missile MCr = 500 tons x MCr0.03 = MCr15
Basic missile MCr = 500 tons x MCr0.045 = MCr22.5

My cost calculations do not match so I'll working from MCr90 to see what happens

MCr90 / MCr0.015 = 6,000 Basic missiles
MCr90 / MCr0.03 = 3,000 Smart missiles
MCr90 / MCr0.045 = 2,000 Nuclear missiles

I believe that the cost of 6,000 basic missiles that require 500 tons of space is MCr7.5.

I have not gotten to Step 10 to calculate Accommodations and Remaining Components, I've also not taken the time to tally up the crew requirements.
