You mean like a plasma field, like this? - http://www.spacedaily.com/news/future-00o.html

Perfect!

I'd buy that for a dollar!!!

Okay switched this one over to smooth shading and got nice results with one tab....did a cycles render to it to show a bit more detail....now if I can get textures to stick in cycles render LOL.
Looking good! Cycles is a lil bit different from the default Blender engine because of the node system. I'm just starting to really learn how to use it, some of the effects I've gotten are pretty cool though.

Speaking of aerodynamics and J-Type ships...

New Wing Shape Tested in Wind Tunnel

Starting to get that urge to design a streamlined flying wing for Traveller

That is an old article, however, I know an engineer who has gone on to Boeing to work R&D on it, they are paying her more than a dollar though. Some systems have already been patented.

I thought that style looked familiar.....resembles the Horten gliders from the WWII era...they didnt have the ability to make them stable enough for widespread use in the day..but I am thinking NASA has a few tricks up it's sleeve.

and yah, go for it on the model :D

Resembles them because its directly based on them. Lil scary sometimes to think just how advanced some of the Nazi science was. If they hadn't had a moron for a leader... well, könnten wir alle sprechen Deutsch

Meanwhile, one model at a time. lol I've got a friend on twitter giving me ideas for a really neat architectural project and there's still that temple project and the interplanetary ship I need to get back to. I'll just be over here biting of more than I can chew again!

So tomorrow's goals are to add back in the electrical conduits (will be more of them but also more organized). Add the air lock ladders for the forward ventral airlocks. And if I can get to it, a few more external lights. Then quit in time to watch Face Off.

Oh an Friday (25th) Rick Baker (yeah THAT Rick Baker), Glenn Hetrick & Neville Page will be guests at the Zbrush 2015 Summit showing off a 3D model of Neville's head getting turned into a monster... so you'll know where I'll be (watching online, couldn't make the trip). Really want to build my skill level up with both sculpting and character creation to do stuff like they'll be showing. After all, what are all these cool star ships without cool aliens?

oh come on organization and restraint are for people who get things done....

Some of the Lippisch designs and Horten's wings were so far ahead of their time it's worrisome....and we still cant build what Sanger imagined in the 40s...Jiminy crickets...half those designs look more like space ships than anything else...good for inspiration at times :D

So that's what I'm doing wrong... maybe I should try getting organized.

Okay time to get back to work on these conduits.

First test of the new conduit, decided to try a ribbed design. Got all the bends in so it lays flat against the back panel and looks neat and orderly.

Huntress47s.png

Only thing is this detail is only visible up close so I'm wondering if in my attempt to do better at adding detail if I'm not going too far to the other extreme. Smooth conduit might work just as well. Then again if I ever did a scene where someone is repairing this Mechanicals Bay, that detail would come in handy. Decisions, decisions...

I'd stick with a mix of smooth and ribbed..use the smooth conduits for the smaller one, with a few larger ribbed tubes tossed in.

Used all ribbed, but I think I'm happy with the overall result. I think adding any more would just be lost detail, what I have now... I think... strikes a good balance between detail and clutter. To me it looks like this space now serves a purpose, this stuff does something. Course no idea what that something is but hey... oh wait I know... its an aim point for the new targeted shot rules. Aim Here for possible Crit Hit! Yup, that's it, I'm just making the model 2e compatible... you guys believe that, right. 8)

Poly count is higher than I would probably like but okay for what I intend to do with this.

So now to see if I can get the retractable telescoping ladders done before Face Off!

Okay, here's a preview of the ladders. Still working on them but FaceOff is on so...

I'm adding lights on the underside of each step to illuminate them. In rendered scenes this will let me keep the light levels lower and less conspicuous which I thought was a good choice for a bounty hunter ship. When not in use the ladders will retract up into a small bay just below the hatch.

Huntress53s.png

You don't know how many times I have wished someone put lights on a ladder :D

Especially the one leading from the deck of a ship, in a storm into the hold, which always seemed to be dark at the most inopportune times.

the access panel, and the ladder both look fine.

The access panel also has the option of being useful for a "You manage to grab onto a conduit before you tumble off into the cold depths of space" event.

Thanks, just finished up the telescoping ladder and assigning some material groups so its pretty much done. The hatch and the grab bars were directly inspired by the ISS and in particular the incident where Luca's helmet was filling with water. It kind of drove home to me how important they could be, especially if say someone had to exit the craft to do some external battle damage repairs or something.

My hatch design is intended to be hinged at the top and swing down and out away from the ladder. This would also give someone trying to exit (probably while landed somewhere) a bit of extra cover. Figured that might come in handy since it is a bounty hunter ship, someone shooting at someone seems inevitable.

It really is funny how much you start thinking about these details as you model this stuff. I still want to place some low intensity light bars around the hatch and then that part should be finished. Next thing will be the cargo bay and air raft bay doors. I also want to add some external hard lights that will shine across the hull illuminating parts of it kind of like they did in later versions of the Enterprise.

Going back to the rear of the ship, there's that large square panel in the center that seems like it needs something to be done with it. I'm not sure what the original intent was, if any, but looking at the deck plans its right behind the engine compartment so I'm thinking maybe make it into a large maintenance hatch.

Oh an although it might generate screams of heresy I'm thinking of redoing the observation blister a bit. Showing the ship to some friends who don't play Traveller, many mistook the blister for R2D2. So I'm thinking I can come up with something that communicates what it is a lil better.

The "to do" list is getting a lot shorter so I think I should be pretty much ready to start UV Mapping it soon.

Below are some quick shots of the finished ladder. Might be hard to see much difference, the struts are properly sized to telescope and I added a few other small details.

Captain Eric Brown RN, Chief Naval Test Pilot and commanding officer of the Captured Enemy Aircraft Flight, who tested the Me 163 at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) at Farnborough, said, "The Me 163 was an aeroplane that you could not afford to just step into the aircraft and say 'You know, I'm going to fly it to the limit.' You had very much to familiarise yourself with it because it was state-of-the-art and the technology used."[40] Acting unofficially, after a spate of accidents involving Allied personnel flying captured German aircraft resulted in official disapproval of such flights, Brown was determined to fly a powered Komet. On around 17 May 1945, he flew an Me 163B at Husum with the help of a cooperative German ground crew, after initial towed flights in an Me 163A to familiarise himself with the handling.

The day before the flight, Brown and his ground crew had performed an engine run on the chosen Me 163B to ensure that everything was running correctly, the German crew being apprehensive should an accident befall Brown, until being given a disclaimer signed by him to the effect that they were acting under his orders. On the rocket-powered "scharfen-start" takeoff the next day, after dropping the takeoff dolly and retracting the skid, Brown later described the resultant climb as "like being in charge of a runaway train", the aircraft reaching 32,000 ft (9.76 km) altitude in 2 minutes, 45 seconds. During the flight, while practicing attacking passes at an imaginary bomber, he was surprised at how well the Komet accelerated in the dive with the engine shut down. When the flight was over Brown had no problems on the approach to the airfield, apart from the rather restricted view from the cockpit due to the flat angle of glide, the aircraft touching down at 125 mph. Once down safely, Brown and his much-relieved ground crew celebrated with a drink.[41]

Apart from Brown's unauthorised flight, the British never tested the Me 163 under power themselves; due to the danger of its hypergolic propellants it was only flown unpowered. Brown himself piloted RAE's Komet VF241 on a number of occasions, the rocket motor being replaced with test instrumentation. When interviewed for a 1990s television programme, Brown said he had flown five tailless aircraft in his career (including the British de Havilland DH 108). Referring to the Komet, he said "this is the only one that had good flight characteristics"; he called the other four "killers".[42]

Back to work on the ship today, finished up the low intensity hatch lights and took a quick render from the shadowed side. Think you can find the hatch in the dark now?

Huntress56s.png

Also, tried rebuilding the observation blister and decided the dome looks better. Tinkering with the external light rig to figure out where to locate the external spot lights.

a man with more intestinal fortitude than common sense :D

the 163 was brutal when it worked, when it didn't work it was spectacular. Lucky for the Allies, the aerodynamics were let down by the mechanical aspects. Most of the aircraft were destroyed on the ground, or shot down duding the glide phases of flight....well except for those that crashed, exploded, or caught fire then exploded, or... crashed, caught fire, exploded, and sank into the swamp.

The ship is looking good the light strips add some flair in low light images :D

Finished up the lighting rig and a few other things. Tomorrow will decide if I want to try and tackle modeling any of the interior. If I do, I can make the portals transparent and that will add to the visual impact in some renders, but it will mean a lot more work doing those portions. Otherwise I'll just set the glass to look tinted or something. Other than that I think its pretty much done and just about ready for materials to be assigned and UV Mapping. Then its on to texturing and can finally switch to Cycles and do some artistic renders.

There are several spot lights on the exterior of the hull and even with no other external lights other than the ships own lights it shows up quite well. I did add one high intensity spot on top of the turret. Now that won't be of any use in combat but it lights up the hull really nice. Plus I can just imagine a scene with someone approaching the ship on the ground and suddenly a bright light rotates in the persons direction... and of course where ever that light is pointing so are those two beam lasers.... gulp!

Here's one more screen shot before I call it a night. There's only one external light in this image, the rest of the light comes from the ship's lights.
