WWI Ship Pics

Mongoose
Here's a snapshot of a couple ships from my WWI fleets I'm getting painted up. I have about 40 English and German ships all painted and based. Just placed another order for 40 or so more. They look better at a distance, than close up like this. . . but here they are anyway:

"English" ships?

Technically, it's allowable. People often used to refer to Britain as England, including british people themselves. I personally dislike it, but there it is. I ban the use of describing all of Britain as England after the second world war.

Then again, I'm Cornish, so never call me English :p

Technically it isn't. The Royal Navy is British. Full stop. :D

(and me a red-blooded Englishman as well!)

Maybe you could refrain from the snooty comments and confine your remarks to the topic at hand?

Turns out I didn't upload the last update. Its at work. I'll get to it Monday.

There's more to the UK than just England, even if we do have over 80% of the people living here. I get heartily sick of hearing Americans - and it is mostly Americans doing it - calling the UK England. England hasn't been a sovereign state for three hundred years. You'd think people would have caught on by now.

/rant.

but it was a valid description of the entire country. hell, look at Nelson's "England Expects.." signal at Trafalgar.

I don't agree that it was acceptable terminology then, but it was in common usage even in the UK itself. Therefore it is allowable. I just ban it's use after the second world war!

What, pray, changed after the Second World War? Refering to the whole country as England has never been correct or acceptable, regardless of whether or not it's commonly done. There's no such thing as legitimacy of common usage, merely prevalent ignorance.

I thought it was called Pommy Land?

what changed after the second world war was the fact that Britain had to re-invent itself after the loss of India - thats when Great Britain came into common usage. Before that England was used by ALL levels off society to describe British territories around the world.

I don't like it, and I don't use it myself. I'm just saying it was legitimate.

what scale are these?

Now, resolution of the english ship issue by an American:

And really if they were built in england, they might be english ships, on the other hand if they were built in scotland or Ireland they would have been Scotish or Irish Ships.

On the otherhand, if they were built in Wales, they would still be english ships because the english have been relying on the welsh to add the poetic touch to the english race since Edward the First. The Welsh are sort of the best of england: its the devils bargain.

As for the cornish, don't let that odd accent and the fact that most technically they have their own language fool you: the Cornish claim King Arthur, and have deluded themselves for millenia into thinking england was greater Cornwall. Cornish ships would still be english ships.

Of course really, if you get into the whole legality of it all, ships built in normandy really should be english ships (or are english ships really norman ships?) And truthfully, ships built in the Aquataine (southwest france) are also english ships. If they built ships in Anjou and the Maine, well those would be english ships too. the french might disagree, of course, but let them sue.

One might use the logic that once upon a time ships built in america would be english ships, and that is true. However we had a revolution, a booted the english out (we might tecnically have been a british colony, but really we like the Irish and the Scot's here, they are like the soul of America, with a bunch of international seasonings mixed in. Of course nobody really wanted america, so we get to have our own ships.

I hope this resolves all technicalities. except for the whole saxon and dane conflcit, but they all fall under the germans so we can debate them with german ships.

*this is of course intended at poking fun of the entire anglo-saxon-gealic-french american world, but if you don't see your own ethnic branch listed here, please assume you are english, as the english empire (Technically the Biritish I know, but what would a scotsman want with India?) spanned the entire globe (unless of course you are australian, in which case the english deny you until such a time as you are essential to survival of the commonwealth, at which point you are english again. New Zealand is like greater australia). If none of the aboive applies to you then well assume I have properly poked fun at you here. This message has been sponsored by the council of ingnorant americans who accept that the world began the day after the dropping of the atomic bomb and that all of history is just fables made up to keep people confused about what actually happened. And there are no aliens.
