In an email from Marc today, CoI administrators have been asked to share the following information with the board.

Following the massive discounting of CT products, Marc is tired of endless cannon disputes and has decided to make all Traveller Intellectual Property public domain for the Traveller community for a limited time only. It is hoped that Citizens will take advantage of this offer to enhance their knowledge of the Traveller setting and introduce new players to materials long Out of Print.

Therefore, he has instructed us to release this password to be applied to any of the GDW Traveller products (CT, MT, TNE) on Drivethroughrpg. Effective immediately and for a limited time only.

I had thought of stating that 1248 was a bad dream that Maggot had before the bullet shattered the glass of his grav limo with the appropriate document citing that it was for Approved Use for Traveller but then how much fun would that be.

Sad, MJD that you will not be part of next year's merrymaking but you can always change your mind again. So whilst there is hope there is always 1248 forever which pays tribute to your courage, determination, generosity (from which you took a diamond in the rough and polished it into a brilliant gemstone affixed upon a noble brow).

I dumped years of effort into it, got screwed over a couple of times, got death threats and all kinds of related stupidity, finally put the thing out and got it canned by a license sunset that the license holder never even bothered to tell me about.

Look, how many more times and in how many ways can I say it... there are idiots everywhere (probably, in this regard Marc too could not see the forest through the trees or the trees as part of the forest). There is no reason to deify the man - for that is what he and you - men with a vision that clashed at conjuncture.

In terms of the other individual and the COTI, I come not to praise him but nor to bury him. There are many such people in the pantheon of Traveller companies, writers, designers, etc. Even the GDW snubbed some people by not paying them.

MJD, just remember, as you go off for as many people may have cut into your work...you have also earned the respect and legion of fans of your particular vision. I side with the chorus that states it is a far greater loss to us the Traveller Community than it is for you. Therefore, let us moan and allow some of us to mourn for your loss and allow you your peace and wish success & profit in whatever future endeavors.

One thing does makes sense about the opening post. It would be entirely in character for Marc to make an announcement about something like this through QLI and COTI, despite the fact that favouritism towards one licensee has caused untold problems for him and the Traveller brand in the past.

As I said, I completely understand where you are coming from. The thing is how can one move beyond that point... You have inspired thought and discussion and generated adventure ideas - so your legacy to Traveller remains firmly entrenched as one of the Old Ones...even if you seek only to devour your "children" but such was the God Saturn and Cthulhu & his ilk.

And, I said, I deep respect for your writing and vision - the loss is ours not yours.

On that we do agree. Without getting crazy-egotisitcal, I brought a lot to the Traveller brand. Not least was a new approach to sourcebooks - instead of 'here's a leaf, a twig and a branch, build yourself a forest' I went with a top-down approach and started with generalities rather than library data on minutae. I don't think anyone had done that before.

That said, there are still plenty of Traveller writers out there. Someone will emerge soon enough and I won't matter any more.

Martin, you will ALWAYS 'matter'; you were one of the voices that gave Traveller some of its strength as a brand, even if you were abused in doing so, and for doing so. I agree with kafka; the loss is ours as a community.

Unless you choose to completely leave the forums, you have seen - or shortly will see - this; I invite others in the community to look at it and think about what I say there as well.
