World Builders Handbook - is there anything actually useful in it?

Traveller was the box and the three books inside it, same as D&D was. CRB2e22 is a direct and accurate equivalent to that.

Now, if you want MARKUP, compare 1979 Book 5 with HG2e22... ;)

WBH is a great book. The design systems for objects fit together really well, so you end up with a real-feeling star system. You get enough information about the objects to give a quick description to the players if they go there. If they need to know if there's a certain chemical in the atmosphere, or what the surface temperature is, for example, you can find it out. The outputs are much better than the T5 alternative.

Of course, by hand it takes so long to do the math that I'd consider it practically unusable on its own. Fortunately, there's the autogenerate program Stargen, and you can generate a complete star system with a click. You need the WBH to interpret the results.

WBH is an implementation of exactly what I'd like to see in a universal design system for MGT - a book that is complemented by a computer program that does all the calculations for you so that a GM can quickly generate a weapon, vehicle or starship.

As far as I am aware, the programmer has no association with Mongoose: coolAlias, who has been generous enough to share the fruits of his work. But a lot of times, when we need something like this, someone does seem to come along with a program or a spreadsheet.

Indeed.

Yet, it seems so obvious to me that this is what Mongoose should be doing itself. You still need to buy the book to know what the inputs are, and to interpret the results of the spreadsheet, so they're not going to lose out on sales.
