Why use pornography?

If anyone still has doubts about the early use of nudity and sex in the original publishing of the Conan stories, check out the covers of these issues of Weird Tales.

Was there ever a doubt? I don't think anyone has said that it wasn't used (and if he or she did, that person must not have been paying attention).

Well done, Mythos! I was wondering when someone was going to post some of these images!

For what it's worth, I am not a huge Conan fan, but I'm REALLY impressed by what I have seen from this new book so far. So much so that I will very likely be purchasing a copy when it hits my local gaming shop's shelves!

Well my take on the subject is that if I ever had kids, and I took them on holiday to Spain, France, Greece, Portugal (i.e. any country in Europe other than the UK or Ireland), they'd see beaches full of topless women.

Which I don't think would do them any harm whatsoever. They're just bits of bodies, just like ankles, wrists, shoulders etc.

The *only* thing I *might* want to explain to them if they were reading the Conan book (and if I'd decided that they were old enough to handle the violence that roleplaying typically depicts) is that the book shows people as near naked because in Conan's world people don't wear many clothes and the book wants to get that "feel" across.

i.e. What would worry me is not my children seeing naked women (which would bother me not at all), but them getting the idea that women (and in particular nude women) are items to be "sold" as objects of lust. I wouldn't want them to think that there's something naughty or dirty about naked people.

The Conan book wouldn't worry unduly me on this front - certainly nothing like as much as having to explain to a child why newspapers put topless women on the third page. :)

If we are going to be true to the spirit of REH, I think we need to see pictures of naked women whipping other naked women.

This, IIRC, occured in at least 3 different REH conan tales.

Um, would it be possible to get lots of those pics in the Conan RPG? 8)

Exactly.

This one's mine. I do mean clothing must be worn when absolutely necessary. And it's definitely not necessary to wear clothes around the house for everyday.

However, the first hurdle in teaching body acceptance is the wife. If you believe that Nudity is good, but your dating somebody (or will date somebody) who's had it hardwired into them that nudity=sex, then it could take some time to for her to change her mind.

The only bad thing about American Culture is that they have no compunction for very skimpy bathing suits that are nothing more than a beach tuxedo; but everyone gets bent out of shape if they see someone in the nude in a totally non-sexual way. We americans, even we Mormons, have the notion that nudity always equals sex no matter the circumstances, but a skimpy bathing suit passes for clothing. Its hardwired into our psychology. Because of this, the Pornography industry has exploited nudity so successfully that any American who sees a nude picture their red flags identifying it as pornography flash and the orgasmic response is fired.

Really? I wrote in an upscale adult book/video store, and all it did was bore me to the point where I'd pass the stuff up anytime. Give me Sci-Fi or Fantasy, action, danger, romance, etc.

Who really wants to see what REAL stuff looks like? Grunting mammals, I say...

Okay. I'll retract the statement.

Yeah, but I suspect that working in a porn shop - and being constantly exposed to the stuff - would pretty much qualify as aversion therepy. :)

Yeah, kinda. I was never excited or enticed by anything there before, or after, I worked there. I don't have the "naughty reaction" a lot of others have. "Nudity is natual, sex is natural, get over it" has always been my mantra on the topic. Others have a right to disagree. That's what makes freewill so damn fun. :D

I do not want to offend anybody here and, I have had some new insights because of the various posts on this topic but, I need to ask one question.

Don't you think that we've pretty much run this subject into the ground?

Are you saying you are getting bored of talking about nude whipping and bondage? :D

Well I've never been much into whipping and bondage myself, but I could happily talk (and think) about nudity all day. :)

I just want you to know that having whipped me in the Most Dysfunctional gaming Group competition, I've taken to heckling you in your column.
