Why use pornography?

At my store, we decided that we would shrink wrap the game. the store will buy a "browsing" copy that will be kept behind the counter. Any of our adult customers, 18 years old or older, will be allowed to look through the book. If they decide that they like what they are seeing we will sell it to them. Once a customer has purchased a copy it is their right to do with it whatever they want.

That's sad that steps like that have to be taken for any book. However I understand your store's desire to do that Mythos and can only think of one store in town that wouldn't consider anything like that. (ATEN-HUT!!!)

It is a shame that we have to take the measures that we do for some of the products that come through our store. Personaly I do not belive that The art work that I've seen for Conan warrents the sealing of the books. However, it only takes one upset customer to ruin the fun for everybody.

As to that other store, I've heard rumors that they have the, Book of Erotic Fantasy, unsealed and sitting on the shelves for anyone to look through. If ever there was a book whos art required it to be shrink wrapped, it is that one.

Maybe they just have it on a very high shelf...

Odd that you need to take such measures, though. Most newsagents cheerfully have magazines of a certain nature non-sealed, on a shelf above the My Little Pony and Spiderman Weeklies. Ad bookshops all seem to have their erotic paperbacks qually on display.

As long as the cover makes it clear that the book is not intended for minors, it shouldn't really be a problem.

Unfortunately that's the big problem in this country, you get one or two people spoiling everyone else's fun cause they either can't take a joke or don't understand that if they leave something they don't like alone, it'll go away.

Oh and Mythos I'm glad you picked up on the subtle(?) hint I gave, the last store in town has the BOEF on the shelf but it's still shrink wrapped, enough people have bought it to offer their opinions it's not a problem. No word on what they're going to do with the Conan book though.

And for the people that don't get it, don't worry, you have to live in the same city to truely understand it.

Thanks for the links! :) And to people who think that these covers are too much. These were newsstand covers in the 1930's.

If your hints meant what I implied from them...I suspect its a type of
gaming store that EVERY sizable city has. Or, I'm just totally off! :)

I for one don't see a problem with the pictures.

I think that it's pretty much known that D&D is for ages 12 and up. It use to be printed on the old first and second ed stuff, although I don't see anything regarding age on the third ed stuff.

Bottom line.... If the picture offend you or anyone that would be in your group, this game is not for you. There will be plenty of people who will get this product as is and you can't cater to everyone. Mongoose has chosen their target audience and it's higher the 6 years old.

I already ordered my copy from Amazon! :D

Having lived in several different cities during the course of my life, I can say that you are correct. There is always one that treats new customers as if they were plague carrying corpses, and the one that LS and I talked about is the one for Columbus. If the clerks or owner have not known you for a couple of years, then they act as if you are an interruption of their sacred routine. It does not help that they only get enough copies of new material to cover their friends speical orders.

Oh it gets better than that Mythos, being the new guy at that store just means they ignore you. I've talked to a few friends that have gone to that store and are known by the people that run the place and it gets worse if they know you and realize you don't go to their store only.

Overall I think I got the best deal since I go in infrequently enough that they don't know me and just ignore me.

There is one good thing about the place, I consider it a museum where you can buy the exhibits. It's nice since people can get books that are out of print in some cases years after they stopped.

There stock of OOP's is about the only reason that I go into their store, and the occasional sale of GW figs.
Even so, I once saw the cashier try to charge full price on some material that had been OOP for over 10 years, and used on top of that. after the customer pointed these out to the clerk he managed to get a price drop. after the customer left the cashier turned to one of the regulars sitting a table. the cashier then said something to the effect that he would never wait on that customer again.
So, except for sales or a need OOP book, I try to avoid that place.

Yeah some friends of mine have mentioned there are time they'll go in to get some GW figs, they'll see a fully unassembled set of sprues and the like, and when the person goes to buy it, the person at the register sees its marked wrong and charges them full price for the stuff.

Suffice it to say they walked out without buying the stuff.

As for the books and everything else, I'm more concerned with the fact that I can get the books without having to go to E-bay or the like and paying too much for the books.

Oh well, Mythos you wanna say some good things about where you work and I'll say good things about the store I tend to hang out at more?

Man, you all are SO talking about a store in Miami THAT-SHALL-NOT-BE-NAMED. :)

Ah, game stores are the same, the world over. :D

Why won't any of these stores be named? If they suck that bad, I want to know which stores they are so when I go to that city (I travel) I won't give them any of my business.

I was just thinking you could talk about the stores somewhere else. You have hijacked this thread. I am more concerned with what people think on the subject of the thread than some PPS(p*** poor service) stores.

Most of the people on this thread agree that the pictures to be used in Conan are not pornography, they are pictures of women who happen to not be wearing any clothes.
