Why RuneQuest?

I'd describe combats with one word: brutal.

Not brutal in what I think of the mechanics, but brutal in the terms of what will happen to someone who gets in a fight. The system itself seem fairly simple, but my group has ended up with some fairly savage results as a result of limbs having separate pools of HPs.

Given that I've been looking for a system that delivers a "gritty" and dangerous feeling to combat, without being as mechanically "dense" as GURPS, I'm fairly happy with Runequest.

well, realism is an advantage, if thats what you are after in the game

And as long as you have a very enjoyable character creation system... because that's what you'll be spending most of your time doing! :D

I find that lethal combat helps focus the game on other ways to solve problems :)

But MRQ does have very nice and smooth character creation
