White Stars or White Star Carrier?

Okay...

yes you use the same mini for the Whitestar and the Whitestar II

Whitestar gunship is indeed another ships...and pretty much a worthless one.

Priority level is huge as it radically changed the relative value of Whitestar II to Whitestars. If you a playing War, it's either two WS II or one WS II and two WS per point...great buy...if you are playing battle it is one WSII or two WS...go for the second option again.

Don't worry about fighters too much you easily out fighter him. Take the tinashi as at least it has some chance against the Apollo squadron, the G'quan will just wilt having none of the defense traits (id no dodge, stealth or interceptor)

If you have the models the pile of Vree scouts (the vaarka or vaarl stacks mentioned above) would be very worthwhile. If you play by the traditional gentlemans agreement about boresights the stack may prevent some of those big lasers from boresighting you. Not a situation I like but it is one most folks play under.

If you are considering going with a Tinashi, you could instead field a Shantavi (add some more Triple damage goodness to the ISA fleet). The fighter superiority of the ISA should be enough to protect the Shantavi from a fighter assault. That being said, a big pile of Vree scouts should be amusing to use and give you a lot of White Star laser re-rolls.

The carriers are good ships though (and Ive said this more times than I can remember) I hate the whole IDEA of 'whitestar this that or the other = every sodding ISA ship') Id take the G'Quan personally. Its Emines will be very useful indeed for getting rid of those pesky EA fighters (and thats a good thing, fighters can pose a serious threat to whitestars if used well).

but not in the fleets mentioned, the EA isnt fighter heavy and even the victorys starfuries are twice as good at dogfighting due to ISA crew quality and the fleet carrier present.

True, though I personally would consider it a little unsporting to change your fleet list once you have prior knowledge of what your opponent is going to field....
