What would you do to improve/change MGT combat system?

Since MT we have used opposed checks to resolve melee. This does introduce a second throw (to simulate the parry or block), but it creates a heightened sense of confrontation. The cumulative penalty approach could be advantageous here, providing an increasingly worse penalty on each successive attempt to parry/block.

Yeah, we have recently come round to this way of thinking as well, though with a couple of provisos, viz, you can only inflict damage during your attack (as per init) and your adjusted score must still be above 8 to strike effectively, as well as above your opponents adjusted score.

I like that idea. I'll probably use opposed checks for this as well. If someone is Untrained in Melee, I guess that means they are screwed, huh?

Ah, are you working on Snapshot or At Close Quarters...these are excellent resources...for what you are attempting.

First, I would overall the whole premise, Traveller should have a basic shoot and point rule. Doubling the armour values is the quick and dirty way of doing it. Having said that special rules regarding armour would have to be brought in line especially to take into account armour fatigue which could be part of the advanced rules. Intitative is good but there needs to be easier way of playing it...without looking at too many modifiers.

Second, have advanced shoot and point rules. This is where I see cover rules, also how to perform tricks like shooting two pistols at the same time and all other cinematic effects.

The most important thing would be keep this book (dare I say booklet) small...no larger than At Close Quarters including illustrations. Let the guiding principle be cinematic play not wargaming which many of these books take their inspiration from and it is bound to be a success...if we want wargaming, we can always buy Striker III.

Yeah, without a mellee skill they were screwed anyway, now they are even more screwed with much less chance of getting a "lucky" blow to connect.
