What kind of software would you like to see?

Mongoose
Hi, due to a recent logic board crash I am back using my trusty old Viao Picture book. And have discovered to my surprise at not remembering how much gaming related software was on it.

I have Campaign Cartographer Pro with Cosmographer as well as Universe (a traveller system Database, available through BITS) and Galactic 2.4 so pretty much I have everything except a extended system generator (which I can fake liberally from charts)

So I am thinking maybe what we really could use is something like a campaign data base tool, Pcs, Npcs, maybe even character gen....

Anybody got any ideas?

I, personally, would love to see something along the lines of Universe that could be run on a linux machine. I haven't gone the route of getting Universe yet to see if it will work through Wine mainly because there are no guarantees that it will work. Some sort of database for worlds, subsectors, etc that I can keep notes on NPC's and the campaign would be a tremendous help for me. There are a lot of great old Traveller apps floating around but I haven't found any of them that will work on my linux laptop yet.

Have you tried Galactic 2.4 using DosBox? I got it up and running on my G4 laptop... Well until it finally bit the dust.

For me anything that involves die rolls or math...I like computers to handle especially if it can be webmounted otherwise not confined to a disc. For me, I don't like number crunching, I prefer the computer to generate the "stats" and I, in turn, will generate the backstory.

Yep, I want to see a World Generation tool, Ship building tool, Trade/Cargo tool, and a Character Generation tool. Give me those and I would be happy.

I'll second (or third or whatever number we're up to) a World Gen tool and Trade/Cargo tool based on source world and destination world. I've found over the years that those two things right there helps a GM out tremendously. Well, those and a quick and dirty way to figure out what services are available at starports and orbital facilities.

How about a route calculator? I mean one where you can type in which system your in, then your destination, possibly variables such as max jump your ship can do, and it puts out a graphical route for you. Refinements could be avoiding amber zones or say known Zhodani held worlds.

Kinda related what OS are people generally using?

Normally I am a Mac Kinda guy, though I have been known to have a windows box or two lurking in the background.

I'm using Windows XP.

I'd really like to see three things (in order of reference):

1) A ship design utility (including MGT-HG when that'll be out).

2) A mass world-generator (could mass-produce UWPs).

3) A character generator (with options for both detailed hands-on generation and automatic mass-generation for NPCs).

What license issues there were with computer programs?

Myself I opted to create quick program for UWP generating. Much easier to just run a simple java code and get the UWP. Still haven't managed to get around trade codes added into the mix but better than nothing.

Intel Mac OSX 10.5
Backup is a Sony PRS-505 E-Book reader.

I'll have to look at what I have at home, but I had a programme (think it was called Tradepostv2?) that sorted out the cargo handling. And there was another programme I had that quickly made up NPCs for me, with a handful of useful skills. I'll check them out this evening and see if I can post up information for people.

My own request = a decent starship/sub-light ship Designer that could churn out stats, notes and designs for all sorts of boats, from trampers and SDBs to specialist recovery vessels and jump-tugs - all to populate those orbital slipways and docks.....

I'm another Intel Mac OS 10.5 user. I'd like software that runs native, but I do have Parallels running XP for those Windows only must have programs.

As stated earlier I am a linux user, Ubuntu 8.04. I could run a windows virtual machine but that would take up a lot of HD space for what will most likely be a small program. I refused to add a winXP virtual machine in order to use Heroforge's excel character generator (an excellent D&D character generator by the way). Heroforge cannot be used in Open Office due to the large amount of coding done in visual basic. In order to use it I would have to set aside a couple of gigs of HD for one spreadsheet.

I did manage to get Galactic working using DosBox (thanks Infojunky!).

I have played with hero forge, if only they had supported the paragon classes.... And I totally understand the entire gig vs usable programs ratio.

Cool.... Have fun.

One of the things I would like to see in a UWP generator is an internal capability to collapse and rebuild systems. (Hard Times, TNE, 1248)

software that runs and 'plays' a Pocket Empire style meta-game for running a background of a subsector or 2 or more. I'd like it to run monthly turns with lookups on an events table every so often. I'd like it to update to a web-site

I'd like the world's AI to be influenced by the world's social profile.

then let it run..and run...and run

I'm poking around with QTDesigner and PyQT at the moment, building a proof of concept starship design program. So far I've been usign HGS to rough up stats and then hand-customizing an MGT version, but a native implementation of the MGT design rules would be a must-have.
