What is Hawkmoon?

Hawkmoon is based on a series (well, actually two series) of Novels written by Michael Moorcock, one of the pioneers of the heroic fantasy genre.

The RPG takes it name from the main character of the Hawkmoon books, Dorian Hawlmoon von Koln, and it set in the distant future. In than future, Europe has reverted to a mostly feudal, pre-industrial state, although some bits of technology remain, in some cases far in advance of what we have today.

The central story in the Hawkmoon series is that of Hawkmoon and his allies attempts to stop the evil Empire of Granbretan (Great Britain, but one where the people are cruel, twisted, perverted, sport beat masks, and are committed to conquering Europe).

That a very brief lowdown.

Hawkmoon is a character in a series of novels by Micheal Moorcock, author of the Elric novels and stories as well (if you are familiar with Elric at all). The setting is a dark far future/alternate reality type setting that is basically fantasy with science/sorcery.

Wikipedia has a information on the setting as well. All of Moorcock's books take place in one big Multiverse and his heroes are manifestations of 'Eternal Champion' who is called upon to maintain a balance between Law and Chaos.

The above information is really a gross oversimplification but you get the gist.

Hawkmoon is the Series you should read right after you read Elric and Corum. Buy the white wolf collected editions or the originals if you can, read them and then come back here and say "All these years I thought I was a true gamer and then I read the Elric books and realized I had no clue." ;) I guess it was just the time I started and I'm showing my age, but I cannot imagine anyone coming to RPGing without having read Conan, Elric and Hawkmoon. It's as much a part of shaping our hobby as the Lord of the Rings. I read them in the mid 70's and saw Elric listed as "Insirational Reading" in the first Dungeon Master's Guide and said "Holy spit! I've gotta take a look at this..."

Elric is da shizzle! One of the first true anti-heroes and I think the first hero who was a sorceror. Also reads like some sort of cross between Greek and Shakespearean tragedy.

I seem to find a lot of fantasy novels via the RPG gateway. I found Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time that way. Oddly I have never read Conan. I keep meaning to do so but every time I go to the bookstore I get distracted by other books.

Nice picture, Ranzadule, but it's pushed all the text to the right, making it very hard to read the posts.
