What are the bases made of? I am thinking about basing all my ships too and am not sure yet on whether to go with Perspex or wood.
It's a matter of taste & aesthetics. If your table is blue, use blue or even transparent bases. If the table is brown, you have to choose - do you want the bases to stick out like sore thumbs, or blend in but look unrealistic?

I intend ( I've made a small start, but currently use unbased minis) to use semi-transparent blue bases, with some white painted wakes, and ship names. My table is black, so the bases won't look too bad...

I want to be able to put the ship name and class somewhere. The ships are too small and there are too many to be able to remember everything. When you have 3 different Hunt class escorts and there is little to tell them apart ... Not too worried about painting on oceanic details. I will be using a wooden floor as a playing surface. Although what I would not mind is the backlit table from the Galactica.

Beautiful as always, Agis.

Were the bases included with the miniatures?

The bases are NOT included. I received some 1/6000 minis from Magister Militum with metal bases (even with sculpted waves) but they are too small for my taste.

I always cut a bases out of plasticard, glue the mini to it, then apply some acrylic water effect paste (IIRC Vallejo) and let it dry.
After that a black undercoat and a quick wet in wet dark blue, light blue paintjob for the sea surface. After drying some white wavecrest highlights.

The ship ID cards are made out of normal paper. I then laminate the paper, cut it in shape and epoxy glue it to the base.

"a wooden floor "??? :?:
Why not the dinnertable with a dark blue cloth?
As easy as it gets, or? And you do not have to ruin your back bending on the floor...

Despite being written for tabletop actions VaS works much better with a much larger playing area (as do most naval rules). You can stage effective stern chases without having to worry about running out of table, work with separated battlegroups, convoys and covering forces, etc.

IIRC the biggest tactical playing area I've used for ship-to-ship actions (apart from using 1:1 scale :D ) was about 80 feet by 50 feet, when we did Jutland a few years back.

Yup. As you know (but others might be interested to hear), there was an idea in playtesting that you could have a full fleet action by seperating the fleets into three groups - a Carrier group & escorts for each dide, plus the surface engagement ships. The distance between Carriers & surface combat would be abstracted, so all three groups could fit on one table (albeit a bit crowded!) Air attacks could be directed to the Carriers while they remained safe from surface attack. We didn't continue with the idea.

Of course, if you change all inches to cm (and use small enough minis), you have no problem with space... ...but possibly one with accurate measurement!

Wulf

Should work very well with 1/6000 minis. I don't think measurement would be that much of a problem unless you were playing on an 8x6 table and the action was in the dead centre of the table. Since VaS isn't to uptight about ranges (its not like you'd have to work to the nearest millimetre) it should be OK.

If only I'f transferred to 1/6000 before the sale :(

I do have a large table, but more floor space. And as DM pointed out its good to have space.

Strange thing, I really like playing on a standard 6x4 table. No more no less. But my favourite gamesize is only PL Raid...
All these big and long battles (more the 2h) just get me bored after a while.

Agis, you need to try a full-blown carrier based campaign game. If the umpire has set it up right you won't be bored!
