website update: more painted GHQ Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine

Hi everybody,

since the release of VaS is getting closer I thought it might be a good time to show off some more ships that I used while playtesting. 8)

The Warspite:

and the Graf Zeppelin:

See more on my website: http://www.agisn.de/html/victory_at_sea.html

All minis are GHQ 1/2400. I am painting some Navwar 1/3000 and some 1/6000 ships right now to present a proper scale comparison.
There are some on the net, but none properly painted by the same painter.
Since I am more a painter then a gamer I am all for 1/2400. More expensive, but the only way to get some details in Naval wargaming.
(As far as my opinion is concerned...)

Very nicely painted :)

I'd love to do our fleets in 1:2400. But I think Burger, and Hash want to play with this at 1:6000 :(

That said, I can uderstand why. I mean we get more ships. per buck ;)

As everone knows, I prefer FA scale B5 minis, but I had to draw the line before 1/6000 naval... They look fantastic, but they are just TOO small! Even at 1/3000, destroyers are not much bigger than Whitestar fighters! I'll stick to 1/3000.

Not really. The 1/6000 ships I saw are sold in packs of 2 or 4.
How many Bismarcks do you really need?
The biggest thing I want from any given fleet is about 10 to 15 PL points at Battle level. I can play a campaign and thats it. For my taste VaS and /or ACtA has the most appeal at PL Raid or Battle.
Therefore I have plenty of ships to spare when going for 1/6000 and did not really save money.
The only good thing about 1/6000 is IMO that you can get plety of "What If" ships.

The cheapest way is IMO 1/3000, you can get individual ships and save a lot.
But as Wulf said even destroyers are really tiny at this scale.

1/6000 does not necessarily give you more bang for the same investment. It does vary a bit but prices are about equal. Just randomly selecting an example, a Navwar 1/3000 Cleveland light cruiser costs £1, 4 1/6000 Cleveland cruisers cost £4.30.

Can't agree more (see above...)...
:D

Agis with those pictures you are selling me on 1/24000 for a scale. I just have to wonder how pieces those models come in?

Well I've been looking at comparing prices between GHQ (1:2400) and Hallmark (1:6000). It seems the average Hvy Cruisers about £6 and a the Hallmark equivelant is about £2

Fair enough there is a bit of a price jump with the 1:2400. Cruisers should be under £2 though for 1:3000, most will only be £1.

The average BB is:
1x hull,
1x bridge
1x superstructure
3-4 turrets
4-6 secondary guns
1-2 cranes
1-2 planes

Quite a lot...

If you want cheaper 1/2400 go for C&C (almost as good) or Panzerschiffe.
I have ordered some Z-Plan ships from them, but they are right now on delivery...

Agis would you be able to maybe (when you are ready) post a picture of the same ship, say the Bismarck as you are a fan, in the 3 main scales and from different manufactures to show the difference? I think that might help some people make their choices.

1/6000 used to be affordable (in the UK at least) until Hallmark was sold to a US company. The prices went up immediately and many of my US chums were dismayed that it was still more expensive for thm to buy from the US than it had been to buy from the UK (including postage!). It was a great shame when Steve Royen sold. If I'd realised what he was going to do I would have been tempted to buy the company myself.

Yup, and did it just as I was trying to decide which scale to buy (at that time, for GQ). So, no contest...

I am working on exactly this. I am using the Graf Spee.
The GHQ one is done, the Skytrex 1/3000 is primed and on the table and the 1/6000 Magister Militum is ordered...

What are the bases made of? I am thinking about basing all my ships too and am not sure yet on whether to go with Perspex or wood.
