Weapon/shield/armor getting damaged

Back in the RQ2 days, your weapons/shield/armor used to take a point of damage every time they parried and didn't absorb all the damage. At least that's how I remember it.

I thought that was really cool, to actually have weapons and and shield all banged up.

Now in MRQ2 the only time they take damage is with a sunder? Was this changed because of the book-keeping hassles?

I can't see "sunder" being used against shields very often - if you score a hit against a failed parry, then is it really worth foregoing a hit against the person in order to damage the shield? If they parry but you crit, then maybe then it's worth having a go at the shield and try to whittle it down over time, but "bypass parry" is probably a more effective choice, even a buckler has 5AP so unless you've got a decent sized weapon you're not going to do much to it unless you plan on hitting the shield four or five times. I'd rather hit the person four or five times myself, cos then they're probably dead. I might be tempted to damage someone's battleaxe as that only has 3AP.

I agree with this; was interesting and amusing to see weapons and shields getting degraded realistically as players got panned about!!. Might house rule this one for my games...

I suppose that it might depend on the campaign. I am intending to run a Viking campaign loosely based on the Oathsworn books by Robert Lowe. I intend to include several Holmgang duels in in the style of the one in The 13th Warrior. Sundering shields will feature quite a bit. :)
