War level planet assault, centauri vs EA 3rd age

We played our first 2nd ed ACTA game. War level planet assault. With 7 points vs 5 that's one big game! Fleets were:

EA fleet or HOW many fighter wings?

2 Omega heavy destroyer.
2 Omega pulse destroyer
Poseidon
Avenger
3 hyperion
2 nova
2 artemis
oracle
olympus

In addition they had space station and 4 orbital platforms.

Centauri fleet or HOW many DD TL dice?

Octurion
2 primus
2 secundus(these should be fun in planet assault)
5 vorchan
3 maximus
2 kutai
darkner
3 centurion
2 sulust
2 dargan
ellutarian
balvarin

Game ended up with draw with EA fleet and orbital defences pretty much wiped out(poseidon, oracle and omega pulse destroyer that was drifting away from battle survived, that's it...), emplacements gone but something like 47 troops left on planet after 12 turns so game was draw. Centauri lost both secunduses, octurion, several vorchan, maximus and darkner.

Octurion, secundus, primus and maximus came from jump point close to planet on turn 2. Problem: I seriously underestimated that fighter power! Trying to scythe through 50 odd fighter flights...Riiiiight. One secundus was lost to omega heavy destroyer in 2 turn, second secundus and octurion were lost to tons of fighters and space station.

Centauri ship of the match was the 3 centurion/darkner tag team that ripped no less than 3 omegas, 1 nova, half the space station, tons of fighters and most of emplacements together with them. That's quite a feat! Nothing like centurions opening up with 48 AD of various DD goodyness...One round was in particulary impressive. All 4 had CAF'ed(yey!), darkner fired laser at omega heavy destroyer, knocked down interceptors, then omega heavy destroyer that had been intact was ripped apart...

Vorchans did quite a bit of damage and were responsible for 2 hyperions and nova as well as damaging last omega quite a bit.

In the end I simply couldn't land troops in sufficient numbers. Some 8 or so lands, take down few troops, then 60+ troops swat them...Should have kept secunduses in hyper space until time to launch assault and all fighters should have been kept in hangars. Fighters should have been dealt with ion cannons and matter cannons. Sentris were needed to make strafing attacks against troops on planets...

Oh and dargans were fun. The stealth kept them alive nicely and they packed decent enough punch. Apart from centurions they were second main punch against space stations :D

But 2nd ed is definite improvement on 1st ed. Especially loving centauri fleet. Centauri vs narn campaign is next on plans.

one thing to remember - vorchans are atmospheric so use them to strafe troops before landing your own.

Hmmm...That could have been handy. Too bad only vorchans alive had no weaponry left at that point! Damned 4-6 criticals...

Whoawhoawhowhoa

Whoa

Whoa.

This is not my batman glass.....

(seriously now though) Hmm is this new or did I miss something in 1st Ed, I thought atomspheric FIGHTERS specifically could strafe troops and that atmospheric SHIPS only allowed them to land and unload their troops en masse?

You did miss something.

"Ships with the Atmospheric trait may be used to attack enemy Troops on the planet."

Yeah I know the principle but its just something Id overlooked in the rules, this is certainly..... interesting..

Yeah. Squadron of vorchans making strafing runs would have been evil

BTW would DD weapons kill 2 troops then?

That COULD have been handy. Too bad I had none functional left after tangling with 2 hyperions, omega pulse destroyer and nova(not bad for 5 vorchans and 2 maximus. Think they pulled more than their weight there...).

I really need to get round to reading the rules before the 13th, and design a fleet, and pick my factoion, still, 2 weeks away yet.
