Wanna a Sommerswerd?

Okay, chaps, this is in the very initial stages at the moment, and it is a _very_ ambitious project.

However, we are currently looking into the possibility of offering a _very_ limited number of Sommerswerds. I won't call them replicas (though they won't, obviously, shoot a bolt of sun energy from the blade. . .), as they will be forged by a well known craftsman and will be, for all intents and purposes, a real sword.

This will be an exceptionally high quality item - the gems in the crossguard, for example, will be real stones, not glass. We are even researching the possibility of a 'premium' edition with a real gold-plated blade.

If you are interested, there are a few things to be aware of. First, this is not a cheap item. You will be owning something extremely rare and of the highest quality possible in today's world. We are talking hundreds of Pounds, way, way North of what the Mega-Deal costs. It may well run into four digits.

Second, you will have to wait for it - we are currently looking at the Sommerswerd taking a minimum of six months to create. As I said before, these are serious craftsmen we are talking to.

We could have investigated making a plastic Sommerswerd, made in China, with flashing lights.

We chose not to. There may just be one Lone Wolf fan in the world dedicated enough to pursue something like this - but he will have something truly unique.

So, just out of general market research at the moment. . . who would be interested?

Obviously it would depend on the final cost, but I would actually be interested. However, where I live has fairly strict laws on real swords and I would thus need to do some investigation into whether I could legally own it or not :)

unfortunatelly such object would be far too expensive for me :(
that is waaaaaay too luxurious version... maybe a cheaper one with glass instead of stones may be closer to my possibilities...

I think you're going to make me cry. I would love to have one because I am a fencer and have a small sword collection, but I don't think I could justify spending that much money on a sword. Especially if you're talking possibly 1000 pounds... being in the US, it would cost about double that? Just couldn't do it.

Possibly, possibly. Very cool though. I know what you mean about quality though. I bought a highlander replica sword a few years ago - there are basically 2 makers - the official maker in Toledo, Spain - cost about £300 or various knock off artisans in Taiwan - cost about £30.

Who is the maker? Are you talking about wall hanging stuff like Kit Rae, or more "practical" stuff like Albion Armorers?

I actually had a sword made by an awesome smith named Kevin Cashen that was based on a mix of the SS and skarn-ska. That one wasn't cheap either! Pity there's no way to upload pics here or i could show it off...

Albion has got unbelievable blades. I got to see and touch some at a gaming convention. They're balanced so well, you can hardly even tell you're holding a sword! However, VERY expensive.

The 300 pound (or about $600 US) would be more doable... but I'm still not sure if I could spring for that much. Would be much more tempting though.

If I won the lottery I would go for it. In practise, too pricey. But I would love to see the finished product!

The person who said the uber-sword and the cheaper sword with glass and stuff is good though. Those of us with not much cash could go for the cheaper version then.

I would absolutely love for this to become a reality but I am not affluent enough to be a part of it. I am not a wealthy man. In fact I'm barely scraping by above the poverty line. I had to really dig into my savings for the megadeal and if I were to pay a thousand quid for this as well I'd probably be living on baked beans on toast for the next ten to fifteen years. Npw I could stretch to five or six hundred at a push (and I've only managed to save up about £20 of the £330 the megadeal cost my savings so far so I'd really be kidding myself if I thought I could afford a sword as well anytime soon). I'd definiitely be very interested but it would seriously depend on the price for me.

I remember chatting to some of the White Rose Armoury folks a few years back and they recommended that the ideal length of a ingle handed sword should be around 38" (34" of blade & 4" of hilt) - that way it's not too long for shorter people nor too short for taller folk. They also said the ideal point of balance on almost any sword would be around two to three inches down from the quillons.

The ideal length of a sword is dependant on a few things, like the wielder's height and how it's to be used (ie, with a shield, from a horse etc). The point of balance is wholly dependant on the function of the weapon, ie a cavalry sword designed to fight mail clad opponents will have a much further out balance point than a thrusting sword designed to fight plate armoured opponents, even if both swords are equal in length.

£1000+ is too much for me I would love to be able to get one but that is just out of my league. What about downgrading some of the ornamentation?

I'd really like to see a finished prototype before committing to buying the sword. If it is made the way it should be and the "bolt of energy" option is added I will be all over this.

A definite price range would help my answer, but I'll sell my plasma, auction off trinkets, sell clothing, mow yards, etc, just to get enough money to buy this. I was once in a position to acquire two original paintings of Lone Wolf book covers, and I have regretted not being able to ever since.

I would do whatever I had to (legally, of course) to get one.

Why not a highly realistic-looking replica? That way I don't have to get into trouble with the local law over the ownership of a lethal weapon, or settle for some kind of cheap plastic from China

To be honest I wouldn't go for a sword with bad balance, a brittle blade and shody fittings no matter how good it looked. I want something that I can pick up and swing about a bit and it feel like a master piece. If it just looks good it looses some of the magic for me.
