Voluntarily Changing Careers in Char Gen

For instance, serving in one of the military careers for a term, deciding it's just not for you; and finally following your life's dream and going in to the arts.

I can't really see anywhere where this is either explicitly allowed nor explicitly banned in the rules. I'm wondering what other peoples' take on it would be.

It is perfectly possible to have multi-career characters. Some careers in the TMB give you a -DM for enlistment if you've had a previous career, so watch out for that - but yes, you can change careers if you want.

Yep. All you have to concern yourself is whether or not the current career requires the character remain (a natural 12). Otherwise, it's just that easy.

A "coming of age" term in the military is a good feature for character background, regardless of subsequent careers.

Good. I figured this was the case and did it on my first roll up. I really like the way the character turned out and was hoping I didn't have to crumple him up :)

For some polities military enlistment or the draft (and at least one term in the military/scouts) might be mandatory.

We've got a character that did a term in the Navy then left to follow her dream of becoming a professional dancer in spite of two left feet and no talent. Found a patron through falling offstage into a rich kid's lap. The rich kid thinks her lack of talent is an affectation, a sarcastic comment on the arts. He's a useful source of money and contacts.

The dancer is one of our favorite characters in the campaign, played wonderfully by her player. Created 100% according to the book.
