Viking Maps

Im planning a Runequest Viking campaign and Its going to begin with the Viking Raid on Lindisfarne in 793 AD. Does anyone know where I can obtain decent maps of the region for this era? I'm after something that shows settlements, roman roads etc for the Bernicia region. I'm from this area so know a decent amount of local history and am planning to construct my own detailed map, but any web resources etc that anyone is aware of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Check the wiki site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernicia
Not for info (dooh), but take a look at the references. It mentions some books that might be interesting to borrow at your local library (*GI Joe away*)

Also, a map of europe for each century: http://www.euratlas.net/history/europe/700/index.html

Not that detailed, but you can use it for borders and geo-political situations.

Also, feel free to ask more specific questions also. There are a lot of reenactors (myself included) on this forum, and other persons who know quite a deal about the viking age. If nothing else works, my girlfriend is a soon-to-be-finished archaeologist, so I can always pass the question on to her.

I have a copy of Britain in the Dark Ages put out by the Ordnance Survey and covering 410ad-870ad. The map is at scale 1:1000000, so roughly 1 inch equals 16 miles. contours at 200', 800', 2000' and showing pictish standing stones, kilns, battles, etc. Highly recommended.

The Ordnance Survey map is definitely the way to go. Obviously, if you want to "fantasize" things a bit, you can add in some things from the OS maps of Roman Britain and the Wall.

Have you read the Bernard Cornwell Saxon Chronicle series?

I havnt. Any good?

Ive tried looking for "Britain in the Dark Ages" but its out of print. Have picked up a copy of OS Ancient Britain map, but its not really detailed enough on the time period and region that I need. It mainly highlights structures that are still around. Still useful though and its a nice looking map.

Anyway, the campaign kicks off tonight and its going to be a slaughter. Literally.

Yeah they're great! Takes place 2 generations after the sack of Lindisfarne, opening with the conquest of Northumbria by the Danes. Then it's the Danes rampaging across England and the resistance thereto.

Nice one. I'll be checking those out. Sounds like they could be good for background, flavour and scenario hooks. 8)

The game kicked off brilliantly last night, the PC's totally revelling in the carnage. Priests were Blood Eagled and thrown from cliffs.

Dane Axes make short work of un-armoured Northumbrians.
