Vacc suits for free?

They're a tad more expensive than body armour or night vision equipment, sent in a care package to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

High Guard:
Typical equipment within includes protective clothing,
vacc suits, defensive weapons such as shotguns or pistols,
ammunition, compasses and survival aids, and portable
shelters. The contents of the locker are defined by the
referee only when needed but always contains vacc suits
and other useful items.

My thought is a TL 10 vacc suit is reasonable as it's cheaper than a TL 8 and is easier for the untrained to use while still being widely available on many worlds.

Don't forget a ship should have to carry emergency softsuits for every person the ship is capable of housing located in staterooms. Additional ones can be placed in other important locations. Picture "In case of breech, break glass.".

I included 2 TL8 vacc suits and 2 rescue bubbles in the locker. The idea being not everyone would necessarily be taking a space walk all at once, but a crew of 4 could have the emergency means to survive in vacuum temporarily. My players quickly upgraded their gear as they got some CR to their names. One has a HEV with Chameleon and Medikit upgrades. He wears it a LOT. I assume it's the D&D "Sleep in my armor" mentality leaking through. :)

Let him run out of air a couple times if he insists on wearing it as armor. Also, very few startown bars are gonna serve a guy that paranoid :D

He's not quite THAT bad, but it doesn't take much of a rationalization for him to throw it on. The armor points are definitely a factor as well. :)
He is the stealth/recon guy of the group, so he recognizes that performing those tasks in a populated area is not feasible in that getup, even with the Chameleon add-on.

Gads... even at TL 15 a Hostile Environment suit is gonna seriously impede sneaking about.
In any event, so long as your player keeps his personal reality on a leash you should be fine. Perhaps you could explain to him the variations of Cloth armor that are fitted into very nice looking 'Matrix' style leather trench coats? Maybe a snap-brim fedora with a holographic heads up display... :D 8)
I really shouldn't mock your player though. Back when I was still playing MMOs, I went through some serious gyrations to get my SWTOR Smuggler [Zeke Fandango -- BEST STAR WARS NAME EVER!] to look right and not be a 'skittle'.

Well, there’s also the Diplo-Vest and Protec Suit for a little bit of comfort when the tricked-out HazMat Suit is too obvious…

Starships are required to carry enough emergency suits or rescue balls to allow the crew and all passengers to survive depressurisation. Well-equipped ships include a softsuit at each crew position and a few spares at strategic points, in addition to crewmembers’ own vacc suits.
Central Supply Catalogue, Emergency Softsuit.

I work on the above - essentially any reasonable number of softsuits, which will keep you alive in a decompression but are naff all use for EVA work, boarding, etc, etc.

If you plan on going outside and need radiation shielding, or plan on having a shootout in hard vacuum, then get yourself a proper suit.

Thank you everyone for your contributions! I've gotten lots to think about. 2-3 emergency vacc suits per crew member is definitely a good start. One at each duty station, perhaps one in each crew stateroom (passengers might get bubbles instead), a couple by the airlock and so on. On the topic of proper suits, I'm still a bit undecied. Great point about perhaps not giving each crew member a proper suit, but let the ship's locker contain 2 suits for EVA work while the rest of the crew wait inside the ship. I had a look in Last Flight of the Amuar today, and its' locker was said to contain one emergency and one proper suit each - no TL on the proper suit though.

It does feel like something as expensive as a ship 'should' (could) include full vacc suits for the crew, it's a very small cost compared to the ship.

TL 8 vacc suits might be good, it's the worst one and thus in classic RPG fashion a good starter suit. On the other hand (as noted previously here) the TL10 suit is cheaper, easier to use, and lighter (means it takes less space). So why not use that? Or, one might even consider the TL12 suit, especially aboard a TL12 ship like Free & Far Traders. Why should they pack 'lesser' stuff? Probably because TL10 is cheaper, and we might not wanna give them too much stuff for free...

Yeah, I mentioned TL8 suits upthread early on but really, TL10 suits are a no-brainer. TL12 if I’m feeling generous :P

Thanks for making me think about this. Changing it for MTU, cheers!
