Up the scale?

I'm wondering if anybody thinks it might be feasible to up the scale of the game to 1:700? I'm certain you'd have to multiply the ranges, etc, and you'd naturally need a much bigger playing surface. That said, just how much larger do you think it should be? 2x? 4x? More?

Three or four times. And you should probably limit the ships to light cruisers or destroyers at the largest. 1/600 scale you can get a reasonable number of ships, but you are looking mostly at plastic kits.

as a matter of fact i am doing just that, see post macro scale demo above I would like to use mostly cruisers and destroyers, but the lack of availability of english cruisers in plastic (There are some resin costing 60-120$ each :? ) percludes that.
So really big play area and some fine plastic BB kits later...

I plan on avoiding useing an tape measure for this the risk of an "wild tape" killing one of my fine ships gives me jitters... :shock:

I've used 1/600 models using different rules over long distances and it looks good; gives a good impression of the distances involved. I've used estate agents' laser "rangefinders" rather than tapes to avoid damage (plus it loooks cool )

IIRC its about a metre. At that distance I was happy using an old fashioned tape measure.

I was planning on running a 1/700 scale game at our local con. . . but the economic realities of buying ships meant that I wound up going with a modified Fletcher Pratt system at that scale instead. VAS isn't really geared toward single ship engagements. Whereas Fletcher Pratt more readily accomodates that. (Plus I am distantly related to F.P. )

I am also toying with doing this with my 1:700 scale ships. I am planning on at least doubling the measurements. I have over 100 Japanese ships fully painted and about another 100 of US, British and German ships painted and waiting to be built. I love the scale! It certainly IS impressive in action. While I haven't used VAS I have used another set of rules by MJ 12 games and used BB's, Cruisers and down to PT boats.

A friend & I are busy building 1/700th as we speak. There are a huge amount of really nice plastic kits on the market at present & in some, you get two ships per box - bonus!

MTB boats actually have a presence at 1/700 scale. I simply LOVE the scale!

Good stuff.
I'm just starting with the Bismark and Hood.
And I'm guessing you multiply the measurements by 4.
The sheer amount of plastic aircraft you get with 1/700 kits is excellent!.

Yep, changing the scale of movement and fire is a quandry. I went with doubling and some distortion since I want to use BB's. Using x4 would mean the table would have to be to large for me.
