Type 34 /Maass class destroyers

I was pleased with the range of content in OOB but unfortunately the Maass class German destroyer did not make it. Given that it was comparable with the type 36 albeit with less range and being slightly smaller, could I use Maass class destroyers but use the rules for the Type 36? Should the range of the secondary weaponry be reduced however, to reflect the difference between the Type 36's 5.9 inch guns compared to the 5 inch guns of the Type 34?

The Maas class were statted for OOB but edited out. Here's what we had:

Zerstörer 1934-class Destroyer

Ships of this class:
1934 Class: Z1 – Z4 (Leberecht Maas, Georg Thiele, Max Schulz, Richard Beitzen)
1934A Class: Z5 – Z16

The 1934 class was the first design of German destroyer after WW1. In many ways they followed British practice, but were under strength, performed badly in heavy seas and had very short endurance. They were also short on magazine space, typically carrying only half the number of shells that their British equivalents embarked. The 1934A class featured some minor improvements, but suffered all of the same failings as the earlier four ships. Z1 and Z3 were sunk by the Luftwaffe in a spectacular “friendly fire” incident on 22nd February 1940. Z9, Z11, Z12 and Z13 were amongst the German destroyers sunk at Narvik in 1940.

btw I also did the rearmed Scharnhorst, the old cruiser Niobe, Tirpitz, Type 23, 24, 35 and 37 torpedo boats and the destroyer ZG3. I'm working up an S&P article with these and some other ships at the moment. If there are any specific requests for other German ships that haven't been covered, sing out now! If possible I'll work them up and put them in as well.

Thanks for this. Any additional German stats would be very much appreciated, especially aircraft stats including late war aircraft such as the Arado 234, Me262 and Do335 as I would love to be able to play some late war what if scenarios :D

I was comparing the Maass to the Zerstorer 1936 to get a sense of what is different between the two. There is an "inconsistency".

The published Speed for the Zerstorer 1936 is 8" based on a speed of 37.5 knots. I cannot find an erratum for this.

In the above data, the Maass has a Speed of 7" based on a speed of 37.5 knots.

It would seem that 37.5 knots would translate to either 8" or 7", hence the inconsistency.

Its right on the cusp of the cutoff for speed bands. To be honest I'd make them both 7" as I doubt either class could make anything like 37 knots other than on sea trials in a flat calm sea :)

I wondered if that was it.

Were they heavier built than British destroyers?
You have them with 4 damage points, where British are 3. You say 'they followed British practice, but were under strength, performed badly in heavy seas and had very short endurance.' would that influence damage?

They were quite a bit larger, and so they get a "4" based on their displacement of >3000 tonnes. A case could have been made for knocking them down a point to reflect some of their deficiencies, but we decided to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one :)
