LIFTOFF – New Traveller Starter Set coming out
Times have changed. Your own imagination is still the most advanced storytelling engine, but computer games are catching up fast. Tabletop roleplaying games are competing with video game titles that cost millions to make and draw on the talents of the best artists in the world – and that require no more instructions to actually "learn" how to play.

Despite video games having so much going for them, tabletop games still attract young players – the magic has remained: The fascination of telling and being part of your own story, the collaborative effort of overcoming the odds along with the players at your gaming table and the total freedom of choice remain the strongest advantages of tabletop RPGs over premade video game stories with a very limited number of decisions the player is allowed to actually make (if there is any choice at all).
However, in the end, video games win out. Because of the money behind them, true, but most importantly: because they are so much easier to learn and play. And because most of the RPG material currently published seems to be targeted at veteran RPG enthusiasts and grognards.
TRAVELLER: LIFTOFF is a starter set for the Traveller RPG made for young players and designed around a "plug-and-play" mentality that lets you start playing immediately. Just grab a few friends, generate your characters, and LIFTOFF!

Created by 13Mann with support from Mongoose and many prominent Traveller writers and artists, LIFTOFF is made for the "next generation" of Traveller players – and hence the perfect gift any Traveller parent can give to his or her kids. New players will find everything they need to play inside the box, while experienced players will find contents like a beautiful, full-colour map of Known Space and full-colour deck plans of popular Traveller starships both useful and incredibly "must have".
At 13Mann – the German license holder for both Mongoose Traveller RPG and Marc Miller's Traveller5 – we have had amazing success with our ABOREA™ product line, a fantasy RPG targeted at young players generating interest for the Rolemaster system. We have seen 12 year olds playing roleplaying games with enthusiasm at trade fairs and being swayed by the ‘new and innovative’ game concepts. And we are very confident this can be done for Traveller as well.

Help us introduce the classic and timeless awesomeness of Traveller to a new generation. The basic rules – which are a condensed and simplified version of Mongoose rules – are currently being written and will be published online for comment hopefully around May until end of July. During this time Mongoose and 13Mann will playtest the rules at conventions and gather feedback – including yours, if you download and read the alpha rules. Simply submit your ideas for simplification or sidebar tips, or maybe entire texts, to 13Mann's website.

If you are a play tester at the official conventions or if we pick up on an idea you’ve submitted, you will receive proper credit in the Traveller Starter Set, making you a part of this endeavour forever.
In May/June we will start the crowdfunding campaign, where we will once again need your help. Back this project, spread the word, and we can put as much awesomeness into the box as possible.
We intend to ship the Traveller Starter Set before Christmas 2014, giving each and everyone of you a great gift to present to your loved ones.

13Mann will provide you with regular updates. Please join us in making this happen!

This is an excellent idea - an infusion of new players will do Traveller a lot of good. One of the problems faced by the system is that the existing product lines preach to the converted and are not very accessible to newcomers. A setting as established as the OTU can actually be quite intimidating to outsiders, especially given the obsession with canonicity amongst the more rabid fans. Giving newcomers an entry point that eases them into the setting gradually is a smart move.

For an introductory box set, visual presentation will be vital. The German versions do have some good illustration - I do like the artwork by Andreas Schroth - however the layout is functional but plain. I think that to draw people in who aren't familiar with the game and the setting it will need a flashy product that gets them excited about the possibilities....

I'm not in the demographic for this product. New/future players of MgT will ask me about certain parts of Traveller's official setting, and I'll point them to the Mongoose book about that subject.

Ditto - I'm so in. I think Traveller has a lot of potential in attracting new players. Mongoose traveller that is.

Yes, maybe there should be an order of knights dedicated to protecting new players from the grognards.

I am very much in for this. If you ever need pictures of kids playing this, my 19-month done would make a pretty spokesmodel! :D

I also think this is a great idea. Not just for new players though!

The Pathfinder Beginner's Box presented a simplified version of the game that many people think easier and more fun that the full game. Also, the resurgence in popularity of D&D "retro-clones" like Swords&Wizardry shows that there is a serious market for a simple, straight-forward RPG.

In my home games, S&W has almost completely replaced Pathfinder (though I still love Pathfinder, and hope to play it again some day.)

I see no reason that "Traveller: Liftoff" couldn't fill a similar need.

Interesting, any links to that Aborea setting as I can't find any mention not in German?

I wonder how much it will cost since the description sounds it might cost as much as the core rules for that FFG Star Wars game?

This is a fantastic idea and is probably the most exciting thing for Traveller I have heard of for ages. Because it was the original Traveller Black Box set that got me into Traveller around 1980 when I was just 14 years old. I really hope its done as well as that marvelous set was, and I for one will be keeping an eye open for it.

I would certainly buy this. Not sure how to get involved though. When would be the ETA, and what would you do if you wanted to get involved in play testing?

Hmmm. I wonder if you (well, me) could make a 2300AD "Powered by Traveller: Liftoff!" thing where the rules are integrated in to the setting book...

Excellent work thus far, I'm doing a deep dive now. Cursory look has me very happy at this point.

I just wanted to point out that we should make sure this boxed set allows new players to pick up Mongoose Traveller and say "ooh I see where the details are added" - rather than "Wow this is completely different". I feel a few games have done this as it ends up hurting them, making a lot of previous material unusable. So this brings up a few points/questions gents:

1) Sensors - great work putting an extra effort to detail sensor rolls and TNs. This will be a great addition and add a lot of flavour. I look forward to seeing the tables associated with this.

2) Bottom of Page 33, Referee's guide:

"Get a Targeting Lock – the character attempts to lock the ship’s weapons onto a particular
target, making it easier for the gunners to hit. The character must succeed in a Sensors skill roll
at a diffculty based on the ship’s sensor system. eg for military sensors this is Routine (6+). If
successful, all attempts to hit that target this round gain a bonus equal to the character’s Sensors skill"

Strikes me as a minor mistake with huge consequences. Thats a possible -1 to -7 or higher? This results in a big big combat change.

3) Ship combat -dodge changes. I'm definitely in favour of having piloting skill playing a big roll. I think based strictly on ship's thrust allocated may not be the best way? I think we all agree that what the ship is capable is one thing, but what the pilot can do is more important? So perhaps a -to be hit = thrust expended, but not higher than piloting skill :)

4) and perhaps I should have asked this first, are we rebuilding MgT based on this? Or is this to transition people into MgT? Thanks guys - :)
