The World's Largest Dungeon has killed my Conan game!

Mongoose
Two weeks ago, one of my players, a fellow GM, purchased "the World's Largest Dungeon", the 1000-page scenario that boasts the fact it features nearly every monster in the SRD.

Well, since then, enthusiasm in my current Conan game has dived as all the players can talk about is what character they're going to create for this new game.

(sigh)

They politely agreed to two more weeks of Conan, but really, what's the point? I might as well just stop now rather than slog through two more pointless weeks where no one really cares anymore.

I mourn your loss, my friend... "The World's Largest Dungeon" is a brain-dead concept that should have NO APPEAL to Conan fans, and only limited appeal to anyone over the age of 14. Sounds like your group isn't right for a Conan game if they prefer that kind of schlock to the more mature, realistic gaming experience Conan offers. Good luck!

DD isn't the same as Conan. So I suggest you alternate game sessions between Dungeon Crawling and Sword & Sorcery.
If you develop outdoor adventures with many diplomatic and politic involvment, then you'll see that the enthusiam for the World's Largest Dungeon will fade.
Hey! Dungeon crawling was good when I begun roleplaying more than 20 years ago. Now I would accept some adventures like this but woulnd't even stand something like "return to the temple of elemental evil".
Conan allows you so many thing that is swallowed in the too rich DD setting.
The thing is that your players should be implicated in something rather than merely following the events.
Good luck.

"The World's Largest Dungeon" (much like "DungeonWorld" and similarly conceived products) is crass commercialism at its worst. Pure brain-dead garbage for the intellectually-impaired --- written by talentless hacks for greedy corporate publishers who see their customer base as drooling pinheads escaped from some circus freakshow, which those of us in the community know to be true only of those other, nameless patrons of our friendly local gaming store. Never us! And certainly not the good folks on this forum who express themselves so capably day in and day out, with nary a cry of "Where are the fireballs and +5 Holy Avengers?" in sight!

Anyone who buys this product --- or worse, buys into it as a viable form of entertainment --- is either too young or too stupid to realize what they are wasting their time and money on. With its insane $100.00 price tag, just who are the publisher trying to sell this drivel to? Young gamers can't afford it, and older ones should know better, unless they feel they must sadly live up to the fantasy gamer's public image as smelly social retards and uber-geeks who find more merit in discussing the virtues of their player character than their real world character. Bah! Humbug, I say. Make mine Conan, or I shall not game at all.

I thought about buying it just to do something totally stupid. (lol)

Funny thing is, that's exactly the sort of thing I've been playing in for the last few years and bought Conan to get my group away from.

It's a shame, but I think you have an easy case to make for a better time at developing characters versus wandering through a dungeon designed to get you killed eventually. Of course, you can't argue with people who just want to hack and slash. Plus, your buddy forked over the cool $100 for the dang thing, so you could join it, speed it along and when everyone is dead and/or tired of it all, just remind them of Conan.

:D

That's a little harsh, guest. What ever happened to "to each his own"? I hope your post was tongue in cheek.

It sounded tongue in cheek to me, but to each his own!

True but it doesn't prevent alternate sessions. I mean you could compare between a Porsche and a Royce Rolls but would you use both cars the same way? So all is not lost I hope for Evilschemer.

I like dungeons too, it's fun to play them from time to time, but if you play many hours (and I'm talking about more than 15 inside one of them -or less if it is a trap with walls) one of these labyrinths, almost everybody would be a little bored. And probably this is what will happen to your friends, and then they will come back to your game. Keep in mind that I'm not talking about give up any of those game, yours and the other DM's.

So, the best solution, IMHO, is making your own campaign as if the other didn't exist. If they, while playing, talk too much about the "World's Largest Dungeon", stop playing it and try later, after some days. That is what I do when my players are focusing their attentions (and the good rolepays too) to another campaign.

Just give it some time, it'll die quickly. My group switched out of Conan to play it and we made excellent progress through it. Dungeons are fun, but they do get old after awhile, level 1-epic all in one dungeon? No thanks!

Bah. World's Largest Dungeon only goes up to 20th level.

Mongoose's forthcoming hardback trilogy campaign goes up to 30th!

Don't worry about it. If everyone else wants to play it, go with the flow and let them gorge themselves on the sugary WLD. Make sure you pay attention to what they like and do not like about it, and use that to improve your Conan campaign.

Why fight it? Why not just thorw it in your Conan game? Just fill it full of monsters from Conan, tweak some others, and there you go.

Its not incomprehensible that a dungeon of that size is hangin around in Hyborea. It could be the tomb of a great sorceror, an abbandoned temple of a demon-god or a long dead city. Chock it full of riches and monsters and watch your players go for it....and the quickly get in over thier heads. Then the tomb radiding becomes a desperate escape attempt. Oh yeah.

I'm not running the WLD game, the friend who purchased it is. He's setting it in his D&D world.

The problem with just dropping it this week is that the WLD GM isn't ready yet. He's got to make some more decisions, notes, integrate it into his world more, and draft some rules changes (we're using a lot of Conan rules).

However, the next two weeks will be intolerable as the players sit on their hands anxiously giggling about the new campaign and what they're going to do. It's hard to win players attention back from that kind of anticipation and distraction.

That's why I think the next two weeks might just be Risk 2150 nights.

Well then, all I can say is wait. Something like that sounds fun, but its gonna get boring fast.

You remember The Night Below released for AD&D? That was another ginormous dungeon. Many people said that they couldnt finish the game because of all of the wandering monster encounters and the endless mapping, plotting, etc.

An hey, who says they cant play both games?

That's why I think the next two weeks might just be Risk 2150 nights.

In this case, that seems to be the right idea. You want your game nights to be enjoyable be everyone, and if they're all into this fad (which may end up being fun, in a cut loose, get silly kinda way), you're gonna be upset that they aren't taking your game as serious anymore.

I've had to go this route sometimes as well, and that's cool 'cause Ive probably got some neat boardgames that don't see enough play. Boardgaming makes a nice break.

Similar to like another poster said, eye this WLD game. Then, when it's done, make it look like a playground compared to your players next trip to Hyboria!
