I've never read any of the Thongor books, but I understand you could consider them "Lemuria" stories (as Kull features "Atlantis" stories)--even though they're not officially in the Conan universe.

I understand Lin Carter meant them as a tribut to Howard.

These might be worth the used-book-store search, if you've got a Conan itch and nothing to scratch it with.

I got the series cheap and read the books (five in all, I think) a few years ago. While far from Howard quality, it is definitely a fun read, if you can stand the occasional cheese.

It good to know someone remembered that RPG I linked on that other post about playing Conan with other systems.

The Lemurian Saga is basically a mix of Howard's Conan yarns, and Burroughs's Barsoom Saga. So it like a Conan stereotype with the use of flying boats and odd riding beasts.

If you like both of the works of Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs, than Almuric and I Am a Barbarian are must haves. Almuric is like Howard's dark version of the Barsoom Saga, and I Am a Barbarian is a masterpiece that is different from what Burroughs normally writes, and has more of Howard's style to it.

Ah, the Thongor books. I cut my teeth on these back in the 1970s and then moved on to Conan, so i am quite fond of them. Still have my original copies of them too !!

As was said they are tributes to Conan and John Carter by a writer who loved thse types of story and they were pure fun, no deep meaning, just enterainment and adventure !!

Hopefully, someone like Wildside or Paizo will publish them again for a new audience.

As Lin Carter did in Conan of Aquilonia and Conan the Buccaneer, I have incorporated ideas from them in my Conan scenarios eg Thongor vs the Gods has some good atmosphere for a Hyrkanian Steppe and Lost City story.

Likewise, Thongor and City of Magicians could be set in Stygia.

I am writing an adventure set in Khitia and Lemuria and will be using the Thongor as background for that too.

Altogether they are a good read.

This reminds me I still must have my old copies of the Marvel John Carter and Thongor comics, buried somewhere deep in my basement. Maybe I should go for some treasure digging...
