The Universe of Babylon 5 for Traveller

Could we have a confirmation of which Traveller book/s will be required as well as the Universe of B5 book? I'm guessing that the Traveller Core book will be required. I'm hoping that this will be all out of the Traveller range that will be required.

I, and a couple of others, play B5/Traveller with Loz, the author. He says to make full use of it you will need the rules, High Guard and Mercenary. The ships are based on High Guard, but I'm not sure where Mercenary fits in.

Cool, I have all of those and was getting High Guard anyway.

And after playing a scenario using the B5-T rules at the Open Day I can personally say that Traveller is a good fit for B5 and this is one fun game :D

As I recall, the need for Mercenary and High Guard weren't certain. It'd be nice to have official confirmation one way or the other. Personally, I might go for the new B5 if only the Traveller Core book was required. If High Guard and Mercenary are required as well that becomes expensive.

This is the only reason I'm considering it :)
It's still a little too close to Classic Traveller for my tastes.

Mongoose has the pre-order info up for "The Universe of Babylon 5" setting for the Traveller rules.

160 pages soft cover.

seems a small book (soft cover is fine)

- I am guessing its black and white sadly ? (ie no us of exciting and appropriate full colour stills from the show?)

That's what I was hoping to hear. Great news!

Hi all.

You'll need the Traveller rules and High Guard to get the very best out of the book. Core rules are essential for the skill tables and so on; ships are statted to High Guard standards, but with obvious adjustments for the different forms of tech available in the B5 universe.

Mercenary isn't essential. Referees can use it if they want to develop specialised merc characters, but, really, B5 isn't that sort of game.

As far as careers/professions are concerned, most rely on the main Traveller rules: they do offer a reasonably good fit to the B5 milieu. However there are some new careers offered, most obviously Diplomat and Ranger, which are presented in their entirety. Rangers are handled a little differently to other careers, but not too radically.

And will there be a way to convert High Guard designs to ACTA?

Some conversion rules may appear at some point, but they won't be in UB5. Hell, its hard enough working out the stats under High Guard; adding in ACTA stats would probably make my brain implode (and I don't have the time, either!).

It will be intriguing to see how the Traveller system copes with ships in another universe and stays true?

Glanced at the previews of Trav ships and it seemed that anything that was a odd shape on the ship just gets filled with "fuel"? Does that mean the Minbari and Centauri ships will have huge areas awash with fuel  or that the Omega's central spinning part is actually just a mixer?

That said there are alot of very very odd things about ship combat in 2nd Ed rpg - in particular gun damage and armour ratings......so it may be an improvement...........

The present 2nd Ed RPG ships often bear little relation to 2nd Ed ACTA ships as they have diverged greatly.

Making up ships in ACTA is easy - making them balanced - now thats hard

Will there be source books on the races etc?
At one point Matt made vague allusions to making a alterntive future version of the B5 universe - did that ever go anywhere?

The traveller base book covers how to handle ships that use different power sources, other then standard hydrogen that traveller uses. I imagine that either high guard or the UB5 books will cover B5 specific power sources in greater detail (thus requiring less space for fuel).

I imagine they'll want to see what sales are like first. Who knows, maybe all their B5 books from this point out will be duel stated.

[Warning, rant ressurection)
Don't get me started on compatibility of books for different B5 RPGS
(Rant over)

That would be scary. I would think it possible that Minbari and Centauri ships will have antimatter power plants (low fuel), Earthforce ships will have big Fusion plants (low fuel), and B5's Jump engine (what we in the Traveller world call a 'subspace' drive) will probably only run on power (no fuel).

as a Traveller person - is that how the Trav system works or are they odd examples - the ships seem to have any odd shaped/ difficult to map bits filled with "fuel?" Makes it easier I guess?

Looking at Ships such as the Vorchan - it will be a hard thing to make up the deck plan - they are very big so I am thinking much of the centre structre is crew / primary systems / engines with avionics, sensors and weapons crammed into the 4 wings?

Of course being Centauri ship it may also need to include - swimming pools, casinos, restraunts and shops.................

there is a very detailed Primus deckplan already - i have not got it but I am told it is very very detailed 8) and fills all the space? In that they have fusion power and gravitic engines

We have current vehicles that do that. buell motorcycles use the frame as a fuel tank, and use the swingarm as the oil tank.
