The Travellers

An immensely funny comic strip from back in't' day, The Travellers was drawn for, IIRC, White Dwarf magazine by the talented Mark Harrison, who also gave us Durham Red and the Glimmer Rats for 2000AD.

The Travellers

I don't know if anybody has posted the link to this page yet, but I think it's worth bringing it up anyway because of its historical value.

And because, in all likelihood, most non-grognards still don't get it even now. :)

Thanks :D

I loved The Travellers back in the day, and was very sad when it (and Traveller coverage in general) was dropped from WD.

Actually... We have been chatting to Mark about this. It won't happen any time soon, but we have been talking about reprinting this, with some all new material!

I loved The Travellers back when I was a teenager, we had the equivalent of Mad Gav in the group I played with back then.

If you reprint it Matt, I'll definitely buy it.

I may have to take back all the bad things I've said about you... :D

Loved the Travellers...before I could really get into Traveller, I was into the Travellers then when I got into Traveller (circa 1983), I laughed even harder. Hopefully, when you republish it might with some of the other Traveller comics out there...as it would be nice to get a good anthology out there for all those who like graphic novels...

Which in most cases is a good thing! :P

And seriously, I hope that something like this happens. With better art, though.

The Travellers link pops up from time to time, but that's a good thing. That strip was iconic Traveller for a whole generation of gamers. It would be fantastic if it could be resurrected! :D

I think that it was all Mark's pop culture references that made the strip so funny. That, and the fact that he was keyed in to all the TV and film tropes before the TV Tropes site even existed.

The Travellers is funny in the same way that OOTS is funny - only The Travellers didn't blow their welcome on a six month long side quest that went nowhere. :)

I only ever had a couple of issues from the "glory days" of WD, but The Travellers burned their impression in my young gamer's brain. It's good to see 'em again.

It'd be awesome to see. I love OOTS, and I love the short run of the cartoon (The Gamers? Something like that*) in Signs & Portents. Something Traveller-specific would be brilliant.

* "I'm dead? Again?"

Wow the Travellers what a blast from the past. I definitely loved those comic strips in WD - who can forget the "Eye of the Hurricane" manoeuvre - LOL :)

The Travellers is for Traveller what the OotS is for D&D - pure genius!

I remember seeing a small ad in White Dwarf for deckplans for The Osprey - 200ton Free trader as I recall. Always wanted to work out how it got quadlasers when I could only have trilasers!

...easy, just make it up :)

I've done quad-lasers several times in Traveller over the years. I just install two lasers and call them four (making each standard laser into two "half" lasers). Voila! A quad laser. Too powerful for you? Do the same thing only just install one laser and call it four (making the standard laser four "quarter" lasers). It's just colour, no rules are bent, and everything you need is right there in the books. The players get to be cool and brag about their quad laser turrets and the ship is a little different than some others making it more memorable.

Or if you really want to, break the rules and allow 4 lasers to be installed in a turret. But then you've got to ask (and answer) why doesn't everyone do it? Maybe they blow up spontaneously

A backwater starport chop-shop on a low law world...

Mechanic: "Well sure I could squeeze another laser into that turret for you but.."

Player: "No buts. Just do it! Have it done when I get back in 4 hours and I'll give you double the fee." <walks off for his urgent meeting... >

Mechanic: "No way this thing is going to last with the extra load and heating, he'll be lucky if the turret only melts if he gets in a long firefight." <starts removing coolant hoses and radiators to fit the extra laser in... >
