The Singularity Kickstarter is Live!

I tend to think that all the campaigns are alternate futures. Deepnight, Singularity, Ancients, 5FW, Pirates... pretending they all happen in the same setting would be a major mess. If you, as the GM, want to do that, go ahead. But I don't see any evidence they are trying to create a single timeline like GDW did.

Am I correct in believing that there is no way to pledge for "everything" in digital-only format? I'd love to pledge for a complete digital copy because I don't want the environmental impact of physical books that I'll never open.

It's confusing at the moment. They have said that much of the stretch goals are content that will be in the companion. That seems like it has its own problems. I guess it could work if the companion is the hardback of the digital only stretch goals.

But this repeated tendency to put additional content available only to physical backers is annoying. Not getting physical goodies without buying the books is one thing. Not getting all the written content just because does not.

Yeah, I appreciate that they have to print in quantity and they want to sell the physical books, so I don't mind a premium charge for a digital-only copy. I just don't want more books.

Pledged, Glass Councilor level. Would've done so earlier, but somehow these Kickstarters always seem to kick off while I'm at work, and the firewall there won't let me do things like that.

👆 What Vormaerin said. Third time that digital-only completionists/backers are basically given the finger. Not amused tbh 😠
Not at all - you are getting most of the content from the Companion for free in PDF format in the stretch goals - hope that helps!

Why not just offer a digital copy of the companion, it will be produced anyway? I have backed at the glass level, I want the books. The companion is going to be available as a pdf, I don't consider it a unique perk of the level I have backed at. It could be rolled into a deluxe pdf backer level or offered as an add on.

My guess—and it’s only a guess—is that the majority of the companion is being released as stretch goals to give a sense motion to the Kickstarter. The reason they likely won’t offer the whole thing as a pdf (added: as an add-on or separately) is because they want to have a reason for people to pledge to a higher level with the hardback version. Those at lower pledge levels won’t get all the companion, only part of it.

If the Kickstarter does well, say all supporters get the majority of the companion. If it doesn’t, they get less and only Glass Councillor and above get it all. Unlike most Kickstarters, all the stretch content is already part of the product and depending on how well it does, everyone will get a subset.

Personally, I think they need an all digital version of Glass Councillor but I don’t know if we’ll see it.

The companion in hardback and pdf form is a reward for my tier, so the companion pdf will definitely be produced.

As things stand (486 backers and £81,273) I conservatively estimate there will be 800+ backers and £150,000+ by the end.

That is pretty conservative. I’d imagine the number of final backers will be a good bit higher once all is said and done.

I wasn’t awake enough to clearly put of a cogent thought. I adjusted my post to read what I meant to say. I meant that people not pledging to the Glass Councillor level or above won’t be able to get it in pdf or likely print unless they sell the book as a separate product.

Exactly, it seems pretty clear to me that this is the path we've been on since around 2018 or thereabouts — the OTU's "official timeline" terminates in 1105, where you then 'boot up' your copy of the OTU at your table and from there, it inevitably will diverge to one degree or another.

This line of reasoning also seems to agree with the views MWM himself has expressed as of late in regards to the timeline and different paths that meander and then re-join, so whilst as of yet unspoken, it seems to me safe to assume this is Mongoose's stance on it. Personally, I'm a big fan.

You'd have to have a metastory before you can spice it up. I don't think Mongoose has a metastory. I think that they have a variety of campaigns that refer to themself and not to each other. If they want to release a Rebellion campaign, that's fine. It's not fine if everything written after that assumes it happens. And they've said that's not going to be how they do things.

They wrecked several planets in the Ancients' trilogy. But that's not "official history". That's a possible storyline.
